Free Download Manager (FDM) is a feature-rich tool for handling and accelerating downloads. Includes a site explorer, offline website downloader, scheduler, video downloader (YouTube, Google Video, etc.), BitTorrent support, and more. An included media file preview prevents downloading mislabeled music or video while a ZIP file preview tool saves download time and bandwidth by selectively removing unneeded parts. A hash check capability can verify downloads and the program can be controlled remotely over the Internet (fdmwi.exe).

Especially useful to overcome unreliable/slow connections that require frequent download restarts, when bandwidth is at a premium, or for very large files.

Alternatively, Free Download Manager Portable is available, as well as a "lite" version, which has not been tested for portability.

it creates several registry entries for me:

Excellent program. Seems to have everything that my commercial downloader program (IDM) has and more. Didn't test for browser integration or website downloader because i don't really need, but everything else works great.

Love this program particularly for infrequent or bad internet connections. Helps restart, resume, and find the best connections for downloads. I also use it for the occasional Linux or other big file distribution torrent.

Tried every DM and app I had to download some troublesome audio files and decided to give this a try. Added the download link and it worked without any special configuration. Thumbs up!

EagleGet creates a Registry entry at HKCU\Software\EagleGet. To prevent it from doing so check the box located at "Configurations->General->Disable Automatic Update Check" then delete the Registry entry. Thereafter, you can check for updates manually from the pull-down menu.

I personally hate programs that try to do everything as they invariably fail to be good at any of it. BitComet is basically trying to become Shareaza. Do people even use the eDonkey network any more?

Midas on 2013-11-21 22:35

Carbonize comment above seems to imply that eMule functionality is built-in BitComet, when in fact it resides in a separated plugin... IMHO, BitComet provides for a comprehensive and rather good downloading solution (encompassing regular, media and torrent downloads).

CornHolio the Gringo on 2015-03-31 20:43

I used BitComet as the first torrent client back in the ol days.
Then uTorrent arrived, and I stuck with it for the low resource usage.
