Files - Duplicate Checkers (9)

CloneSpy v2.7

Checker on 15 Dec 2012
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Suggested by Fluffy

CloneSpy can help you free up hard drive space by detecting and removing duplicate files with exactly the same contents regardless of their name, date, time, or location. Also, CloneSpy is able to find files that are not exactly identical, but have the same file name. This can be an issue for example if you have different versions of a file and you want to find and remove the older versions. CloneSpy is able to find zero-byte files.

Myself, I prefer using Dupemerge (http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/ntutils.html. It leverages the use of NTFS hardlinks to free space while keeping both directory entries -- even with different names. If you install the Hardlink Shell Extension, you can see which files are hardlinked easily.

I've used this utility for about 5 years along with several other dup killers. It has a bit more of a learning curve than some of the others and users might miss, or not understand, certain options (like how to show all of the duplicate files together instead of having to confirm each file individually. Maybe the designer could make showing all of the files together the default. It lets you save a set of options that you can load for different situations. I haven't used it much but it's worth looking if you want customized de-duping. The app isn't the fastest but I'm not looking for fast as much as I'm looking for accuracy. So far, this app hasn't let me down. It's a useful addition to my toolkit.

I've been using CloneSpy for many years, some of my suggestions have made it into the program and I was beta-tester in the process of making the program work with Windows DEP.

It may not be the fastest program, but it works flawlessly and the developer reacts nearly instantly when you inform him of bugs (and most of them should by now be gone) or suggestions, the "Delete empty subdirectories" in batch that was added to 2.52 comes from me (and maybe others)

As for some of the comments above:

No it will not assume a.txt another a.txt, as it builds checksums for each file (and probably also compares sizes)

No, there is no need to confirm 10,000 times that you want to delete a file, unless you tell it to do so

And most of all, it's a neat little program at just over 1Mb, without any dependency on DLL's or the registry.

Simple Duplicate Finder v1.2.0.3

webfork on 7 Oct 2012

Simple Duplicate Finder helps track down similar files either to delete extras and save space or to compare versions. While most duplicate-searching programs are looking for exact copies, SDF uses a Percentage Search, allowing you to adjust the percentage difference required for a file to be considered a duplicate. Once scanned, the program will display the number of bytes which differ as well as the specific percentage match between files.

This is useful for example with metadata: when Windows Image Import tool downloads pictures from your digital camera, additional XML data is inserted into the images and video files, including a timestamp of when the image was downloaded to the computer. Although the image is identical in every way to its original, the file will appear as unique. SDF can detect these files and help remove them.

It's not freeware. It's a time-limited demo.

Onesimus Prime on 2011-01-09 02:18

At least three places on their site, they call it freeware, including the phrase "Freeware for private and commercial use" (http://www.alldup.de/en_alldup.htm)
On the other hand AllSync, from the same company, is time-limited shareware--perhaps Lee got the two confused?

webfork on 2013-02-16 20:12

@Prime: Unknown. Anyway, just rechecked the status and the current license info is correct.
