Bandizip is an archive tool that supports the creation and extraction of common compression formats, as well as the specialized ZIPX format (from the makers of WinZip). Supports a customizable interface, the searching of archives by file name, file splitting, password protection, self-extracting archives, and varying levels of compression. Also supports the creation and extraction of more specialized formats from 7-zip and WinRAR.
Additionally, Bandizip's "High Speed Archiving" function will allow you to compress or bypass the files its own algorithm on multimedia files (AVI, WMV, MP3...) or archive files (ZIP, RAR, 7Z...) that won't benefit from additional compression. This can increase archiving speed dramatically. Extract formats supported include 7Z, ZIPX, RAR, ALZ, EGG, TAR, BH, LZH, BZ2, ISO, CAB, WIM, XZ, ARJ, ZIP, Z and more.
Supports both 32 and 64-bit, as well as 29 world languages. A portable beta version is also available.

Oh, and why is there never a change log shown for Bandizip's updates? I've even had that problem on their site.

Thanks, Midas! My mistake; I kept looking in the Bandizip forum, rather than the Bandisoft announcements. |
FileOptimizer is a lossless file size optimizer supporting a long list of file types from audio/video (MP3, OGG, OGV), image (GIF, JPEG, PNG), and even office formats (DOCX, XLSX, ODT, PDF) and system files (DLL, EXE). The program keeps the behavior of the file untouched, but with its size reduced thanks to a variety of recompression and optimization techniques. Original files are sent to the recycle bin for restoration in the event the uncompressed version is preferred.
Supports drag-and-drop of files into the window or onto the program icon.
A 64-bit version is available (within the folder).

Outstanding, especially on PNG files and when used in concert with RIOT (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1821). I've thrown a wide variety of files at this program and seen quite a bit of space saved. It's difficult to tell which supported files will compress by how much, but it's always important to test when posting web images or distributing files to large groups, saving a lot of bandwidth.

It seems like, although this program supports all those file types, the parameters seem only to be applicable to swf and gz files. I couldn't figure out how to work this on a jpg file. Anyone got a tip for me? |
PeaZip is an easy to use file manager-style compression tool supporting its native PEA archive format that features splitting, flexible encryption and integrity check schemes. It also supports most mainstream archive formats, including 7ZIP, ACE (read), BZIP2, CAB, GZIP, MSI (extr.), RAR (extr.), TAR, UPX, ZIP etc.
Alternatively, PeaZip Portable portablizes bookmarks and includes both 32 and 64-bit versions, automatically using the proper one on each PC.

I encountered a most undesirable feature of this software. If you delete any of the unnecessary language files (i.e. non English), and then try to run PeaZip, the software automatically terminates! I have been looking for a good portable file archiver, but with this bad bug, PeaZip is not my choice! |

there is no "zip" file on the "download" page - only an installer that universal extractor could not process. When I ran the install, arcthemall showed up as an installed program which i promptly uninstalled. Where is the "zip" file.

Thanks, Lupo73, for that info. Looks like the download link should point to the Sourceforge link that comes from the website page. |
ArcConvert converts between a wide variety of archives and includes automatic password detection. Useful to swap an archive to a more familiar format rather than track down a different program that supports it.
Most of the common archiving formats are supported including zip, 7-zip, RAR, TGZ, as well as ~60 other lesser-known formats. Available export formats include ZIP, 7-ZIP, CAB, LHA, TAR, TGZ, BZ2, YZ1, BGA, RAR, ACE, NOA32, PAQAR, UHARC, YZ2, DZ, HA, XZ, and FreeArc

Other archive programs can make RAR files, they are just not allowed to "compress" using the RAR format. They may, however, "store" files using the RAR format. Only WinRAR has the license to use the RAR compression, but others may use the RAR storage. There is a valid distinction here.

I just downloaded and tested this. For converting to RAR compression types, you have to place WinRAR.EXE in the application directory. Still, a handy utility.

While not a dealbreaker, the WinRAR issue continues. The drop down for the target format includes two identical entries: |
