VeraCrypt v1.19

  • Released on 17 Oct 2016
  • Suggested by abc

VeraCrypt is volume encryption software that functions like an attached drive, making it possible to actively work with data like any other drive until the volume is dismounted. The program supports favorites, hot keys, hardware acceleration, and auto-mount options. Includes a variety of available tools for added security including keyfiles, security tokens, hidden volumes, auto-dismount, cascaded encryption, and cached password management.

Cross-platform with clients available for Mac and Linux. Alternatively, VeraCrypt Portable is also available.

VeraCrypt is based on the inactive TrueCrypt, attempting to solve some of the program's documented weaknesses. The program can open and convert TrueCrypt volumes.

As shown above, "Download the installer and launch", this is not a portable application, but an application hidden inside an encrypted installer. Most installers can be accessed readily as an archive using 7-Zip, PeaZip or other application, and the contents can then be extracted and sent to Virustotal without executing any code in the installer. That is not the case with VeraCrypt, since one must execute the installer to unzip the application.

This does not mean that the application or installer is untrustworthy, but it does mean one can't examine the internal files until the installer runs. More openness would be appreciated.

Drag'n'Crypt ULTRA v2.3.9 Updated

webfork on 28 Feb 2017
  • 652KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 20 Jan 2015
  • Suggested by Fluffy

Drag'n'Crypt ULTRA is a small file encryption tool that uses a handy "drop box" interface to make encryption and decryption fast and easy. Uses the Twofish encryption algorithm

Note:

  • File size is limited. Maximum file size depends on 1/2 free memory (for example: with a RAM of 512 MB RAM you can encrypt a 256 MB file). The author recommends TrueCrypt for larger files.
  • The website is in German, but the program is in English.
  • Starting from version 2.2.0, Drag'n'Crypt ULTRA is no longer backwards-compatible with data encrypted using Blowfish or TEA.

TrueCrypt v7.1a

Midas on 26 Apr 2016

TrueCrypt creates and opens secure volumes that function like an attached drive, making it possible to move files to and from a secure place, as well as open and run. Additional security features include support for key files and hidden volumes inside regular ones (for plausible deniability) for higher security, as well as hardware acceleration and benchmark tools for speed.

Supports a range of encryption algorithms including AES, Serpent, and Twofish, as well as combinations (e.g. Serpent + Twofish) in the event that one of them is eventually cracked.

Note: This program may have unfixed security vulnerabilities.  As version 7.2 only allows the opening of TrueCrypt volumes, not their creation, we are linking to a mirrror of Version 7.1a.

There are two TrueCrypt clones, VeraCrypt 1.0c and HaDES 1.1.

VeraCrypt seems to be still active.

HaDES seems to be a dead link.

Even the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) has excluded the TrueCrypt/sourceforge and Truecrypt.org webpages.
