An address to the concerned users...

The switch to the Lite and Pro editions was a very difficult decision but a necessary one, one that took years to shape up. In summary, if this switch did not take place, there would be no further development and the den4b project would cease to exist long ago.

You can read the full explanation and the reasoning behind it on the news board and the forum (https://www.den4b.com/news/1851/how-it-all-evolves-into-lite-vs-pro). That post also references an older post that highlighted some of the precursor issues 5 years earlier (https://www.den4b.com/news/438/great-and-not-so-great).

Regarding the comments that the switch occurred suddenly or secretly – that is simply not true. Such comments only demonstrate disregard and ignorance of the author. The posts referenced above illustrate how the change was unfolding over a period of at least 5 years, taking into account the feedback of the community of users. Furthermore, the change and the limitations were clearly communicated and documented in the changelog of every affected product.

If you do not wish to support developers – that is your choice. But why give out about something that you get for free. Move on to something that suits you better, as there are plenty of alternatives. For those who don’t mind, feel free to use older versions without official support.

I hope that this will shed some light on the issue and help you understand the reasons, if you wish to understand.

Take care.

What a weird random drive-by necro comment... Anyways, I still use v5.71 of this program, it works better/faster/and with less DPI issues then the newer ones surprisingly, and contains much less bloated, like mp3 meta data now... really?

But if you want to talk free vs pro, then my one main gripe with that is/was the "pro" versions were not portable, they stored the license file or whatever it was in the AppData location IIRC, I had to refund it years back because that was annoying to me.

Why bother with an inflated 25 MB "advanced" tool with muddy licensing terms
while 485 KB slim Pintosoft's FocusOn Renamer v1.3 (Free for everyone - personal and commercial use) will perform just as well ?

Ant Renamer v2.12.0

Checker on 13 Jul 2015
  • 3MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 4 Jul 2015
  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

Ant Renamer provides many options for the batch renaming of files and folders. The program includes the ability to change file extension, replace/insert/move strings, change case, even give files random names. The program can even rename based on date and time (great for scanned files) or using exif/mp3 tag info (making metadata the file name), or regular expressions. File renaming can be previewed before execution and changes can be added to a batch file and saved for future use.

Alternatively, Ant Renamer Portable (PortableApps.com Format, adjust drive letters and paths as you move PCs).

What's new?
  • Option (disabled by default) to consider the last "." in folder name as extension delimiter. Previous versions were always considering that a folder could have an extension, but that's commonly used.
  • When folders are renamed, the path of files in the list is updated if needed. Previous versions were giving an error as files contained by renamed folders were not found anymore.
  • "Case sensitive" option in the "Multiple string replace" action.
  • A few bugs fixed.

There is no way to rename using multiple methods/rules at the same time. You have to use one method at a time. Also, can't preview all the files and can't undo after closing the software. So, I prefer Advanced Renamer.

I don't know whether it is solid, but it is not portable, I extracted the x64 bit installer ('solid_renamer-120-x64.exe', version 1.2.0.5) and it stored its settings in C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Roaming\Bitdreamers\Solid Renamer. I cut the config folder and put it in program's folder but the next time I ran it, this renamer re-created its config folder in AppData. The previous version (1.1.1) may not be that solid but at least is portable.

Oscar's File Renamer v1.2

Checker on 15 Mar 2014
  • 556KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on
  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

Oscar's File Renamer is a unique file renaming tool with an integrated text editor and macro support. You can perform custom editing of filenames using the integrated text editor, then apply all the changes in one operation.

Note: Newer versions of the program are shareware; linking to old version.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: Windows registry. But it writes a small number of non-critical settings (window position, last path accessed, last sort direction), so I am accepting it as portable.
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware
How to extract:
  1. Download the installer and extract to a folder of your choice
  2. The application files are located in the {app} subfolder
  3. Launch Renamer.exe

Problems? This process requires an up-to-date component (Innounp 0.36 or above) for Universal Extractor. If you have difficulty extracting the files, follow the steps below and retry:
  1. Download the latest version of Innounp
  2. Extract the RAR package to the \bin folder of Universal Extractor, overwriting the existing innounp.exe

Brilliant little program, exactly what I need! Same as the authour, me too I was fed up renaming hundreds and hundreds of files using the Windows F2 key. I was thinking about writing a similar program, but luckily I looked on this website first for existing programs and samed myself a lot of time developing the thing myself. This one definately stays on my toolbox-USB-stick! Many thanks to the author.

this is indeed a very robust renamer!

im torn between this and Advanced Renamer :(
http://www.portablefreeware.com./index.php?id=1848

both are great, coming from payware 'Better File Renamer', both these freeware offer every naming scheme/option!

this seems to provide more support for multi-languages.
i will probably make the switch to this.

great add.!

Magibon on 2011-03-10 01:41

i take that back, i just tried using this and im disappointed in the interface.

sadly, the abundance of features make it very difficult to use.

im sticking with Advanced Renamer, while it doesn't provide support for multilanguages, it's interface is much more user-friendly. simplicity and ease of use for me is important.

i'll use this only when required for multilanguages, but for everyday usage, im sticking with Advanced Renamer.

ripu on 2015-11-02 10:41

I tried to use latest zip (8.4), could not do anything. There was no option to add rules. May be something is wrong with the UI or it does not support Windows 8.1 N version.

I use it since W98. Very easy copy/paste/crop/resize/scan/print/sharpness and many other things.
Dont have a pen/filler. Not a full img editor but very easy and has many options.
Fully work is done with xnview, mspaint(for pen) and PaintDotNet for layers.(except for the layers that xnview does not have, everything is easier with xnview)

JudyGarland on 2020-10-22 05:38

XnView is not Windows XP compatible anymore. In order to make it work with XP, replace libwebp.dll (plugin folder) with with webp.dll (xnview.com/download/plugins/webp.zip).

quote @tc: You can stop the intro photo by editing photoscape.cfg, and turning intro.photoOn from on to off. You could also edit the url, to point to a local image

I installed on USB with 7zip.
In addition to tc's message: if you make photoscape.cfg read-only, it will keep it's settings in the cfg file.

I also deleted the plugins dir (unwanted toolbar in there), and renamed the file PSMsgHook.dll in the main folder to PSMsgHook.dllold.
