Miranda IM is an extensible, customizable instant messenger client supporting AIM, ICQ, IRC, Gadu Gadu, MSN, Yahoo and Jabber. The program can support more protocols via an extended plugin system to include Netsend, Skype, etc. and an add-on system can add other features such as skins, an RSS feed reader, weather alert, world clock, secure messaging, etc.

@apometron
What you state is not true, both Pidgin and Miranda NG can connect to Facebook via plug-ins. It is not Miranda IM and Pidgin fault that evil Facebook dumped open-source XMPP (Jabber) protocol in favour of a proprietary, closed-source one. Anyway, using Facebook for communication is the worst choice possible.

I think if Miranda IM doesn't support Facebook it could simply be removed from the description. If Miranda NG works with it it might be worth adding to its entry for users who are looking for the support.

Miranda IM 0.10.53 fails to connect to AOL while Miranda NG 0.95.5 connects fine. Not that I need AOL, just an observation.

Miranda NG is a multi-protocol instant messaging client drawn from the popular Miranda IM. The app supports the most common protocols by default including AIM, ICQ, IRC, Gadu Gadu, MSN, Yahoo and Jabber. However, additional protocols, plugins and languages are available via "Main menu > Show full plugin list" (see online list).

As NG is a code fork of Miranda, an FAQ about the differences is available.

Alternatively, Miranda NG Portable is also available.

smaragdus: My understanding is that they include all the popular plugins inside the distro. This is because plugin fragmentation and version issues were part of the reason for the Miranda NG code fork.

I really didn't like not being able to hit "enter" and have the message send. You can configure this behavior under options - Message sessions - General tab - Sending messages - checkbox "Send message on 'Enter'"

If that seems like a lot to go through to configure something fairly basic, that's kind of how this client works: a little confusing with a trade-off of intense customization.

Most of the messengers have the auto-login feature which requires the user account information including password to be saved for subsequent logins. If user opts to save or remember the password then the username and password are stored on the system in proprietary format.
