It's not working: I try to open a file in it, and nothing happens

outskirter on 2014-02-15 15:15

It works for me, Jebug. Are you sure the image file you're trying to open contains EXIF data? Some image files either don't have any to begin with, or have been modified in an image editor that has destroyed the EXIF data when saving the modified file. It happened to me a number of times until I switched to a different editor.

Besides, most good image viewers and editors can display EXIF data, so a separate tool isn't usually necessary.

What's new: Added dark mode support. Improved HiDPI font size support.

Minor updates for v10.1:
7 October 2022: Updated the folder selection dialog that opens via the “Browse” button, to fix the issue where some folders were intermittently missing from the list.
20 September 2023: Fixed the minor bug where the file name highlighting was not updated after pressing the “Reset EXIF Orientation to Normal” button.
11 December 2023: Removed the “In the future, do not show me this dialog box” checkbox from the crop warning dialog, because it was stored by Windows in its registry and was difficult for the users to change later. Now the crop warning dialog is controlled only by Options – Display crop warning in JPEG Lossless Rotator.

An address to the concerned users...

The switch to the Lite and Pro editions was a very difficult decision but a necessary one, one that took years to shape up. In summary, if this switch did not take place, there would be no further development and the den4b project would cease to exist long ago.

You can read the full explanation and the reasoning behind it on the news board and the forum (https://www.den4b.com/news/1851/how-it-all-evolves-into-lite-vs-pro). That post also references an older post that highlighted some of the precursor issues 5 years earlier (https://www.den4b.com/news/438/great-and-not-so-great).

Regarding the comments that the switch occurred suddenly or secretly – that is simply not true. Such comments only demonstrate disregard and ignorance of the author. The posts referenced above illustrate how the change was unfolding over a period of at least 5 years, taking into account the feedback of the community of users. Furthermore, the change and the limitations were clearly communicated and documented in the changelog of every affected product.

If you do not wish to support developers – that is your choice. But why give out about something that you get for free. Move on to something that suits you better, as there are plenty of alternatives. For those who don’t mind, feel free to use older versions without official support.

I hope that this will shed some light on the issue and help you understand the reasons, if you wish to understand.

Take care.

What a weird random drive-by necro comment... Anyways, I still use v5.71 of this program, it works better/faster/and with less DPI issues then the newer ones surprisingly, and contains much less bloated, like mp3 meta data now... really?

But if you want to talk free vs pro, then my one main gripe with that is/was the "pro" versions were not portable, they stored the license file or whatever it was in the AppData location IIRC, I had to refund it years back because that was annoying to me.

it is version 7.0 right now, is portable and free
great viewer, fast and lite. some good lossless transformations
use it as is, support is dead.
take care, thumbnail database is not big enough, optimisation of thumbnail database will clear most thumbs. resizing thumbnails will clear all database so using Tag section is completly useless. (tags are saved on thumbnail database)
Still one of top 3 in my image viewers.
it use SageThumbs https://sourceforge.net/projects/sagethumbs/
to manage .eps files

I fully agree with Miklo, having used FastStone for several years, I really like it: does everything I want almost intuitively.I still use version 6.4 . Tried to use the last version 7.6 but reversed to the previous one because in the last release there is a bug in the Multi-Page File Builder to created an Animated GIF (Alt+M):. the resulting GIF file shows only the first 2 loaded images then stops.
