I don't see a 64-bit version but I'm gonna give this a try even though I am happy with the File Renamer I use (A Renamer), but ya never know I wouldn't wanna miss out on the best software ever :) lol

GREAT for renaming using regular expression (regex) that contains lookbehind. It also accepts the plus symbol (+) inside lookbehind. Other renamers does not support any of these, not even Advanced Renamer and Bulk Rename Utility.

It can apply multiple regex parameter separately for the same batch.

Issues are there are no way to apply regex only to file name and not to the extension. It also needs admin privilege to run.

My mistake, it does not need admin privilege to run.

Bat To Exe Converter 3.0.10

billon on 24 Mar 2018
  • 4MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 23 Mar 2018
  • Suggested by Cornflower

Bat to Exe Converter takes DOS or Windows batch file scripts (.bat) and converts them into executable (.exe) files. This is useful for creating shortcuts on USB flash drives along with their appropriate icons, preventing an annoying batch window from appearing, and includes encryption and decompiler features.

I realise that this is a very old thread but the update info shows v3.0.8 was released on 1st Feb 2018. I've just tested Bat_To_Exe_Converter_(x64).exe, i.e. the 64-bit portable exe of v3.0.8. I used a 2-line BAT:

echo This is a test
pause

I compiled this, together with an icon, and submitted the result to VirusTotal. I'm disconcerted to see a score of 21/66 (https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/5ac7112fae2a252a5faa72199587cea903d97194cea45934df4fd1fecc326af3/analysis/1518532866/) and thought I would share this. Whilst I was expecting a few false positives (especially from less well-known AV products), 21 red flags out of 66 seems high. Does anyone have any recommendations for a different product? I'm retired and rarely need this so hoping for both freeware and portable.

webfork on 2018-02-13 22:15

RickC: You're right to look at high VirusTotal ratios as you did, but I have tested this program many times over the years without issue. As noted earlier in the comments, programs like this will always show up on scanners.

zorro on 2018-02-21 16:08

Interesting enough - when you visit the homepage and try to download the program, the button doesn't work, it's kind of greyed out (observation as of today, 21. Feb. 2018). Disabling all blockers doesn't help. The direct download link in this entry works however.

Added a note about films because I watched that Sintel short film created with Blender, which was in some areas even better than the work Pixar and Dreamworks are putting out commercially.

PassMark OSFMount v2.0.1001

billon on 22 Mar 2018
  • 6MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 22 Mar 2018
  • Suggested by Stone Tablet

OSFMount is a collection of virtual drive tools that allows mounting local disk image files as a drive letter, RAM disks and mounting CD or DVD images (for simplicity or speed). Supported image types include IMG, DD, ISO, BIN, NRG, SDI, AFF, AFM, AFD, VMDK (used by VMware), VHD (Virtual PC) and more.

The program is ideal for machines without a CD/DVD drive and, as most images are bit-for-bit copies of disk partitions, many programs will treat them as the real thing, enabling programs that require a program disc. For disk images, the program can give access to these files without booting or other required visualization software. RAM disks have a variety of uses including high speed caches, programs with frequent/intense disk reads/writes and some database applications.

Command line tools are also included.

Note: The developer warns: "it is recommended that 64-bit Windows is used when large disk image files are to be mounted."

@freakazoid: CDmage is ancient, I'm surprised someone even uses it anymore... :)

skall on 2015-02-23 10:21

whenever i try to mount an image (different formats), the message 'wrong parameter' appears and the new drive is not selectable? i am using the 64bit version and have admin rights.

any hints what might cause this?

i might be wrong, but it seems like this is the only up to date portable virtual cdrom software for win8.1?

Portable Reviewer on 2015-09-15 12:36

@Midas CDmage works like a charm unlike PassMark OSFMount despite "being ancient". Nothing ancient about it. PassMark OSFMount couldn't detect my image file properly as @freakazoid experienced. In fact very few free portable mount tools could handle my image file properly. I'm surprised you don't use CDmage to mount......

ChromeHistoryView v1.30 realeased 14-MAR-2017

Changelog: Version 1.30
"Added new columns: 'Transition Type' and 'Transition Qualifiers'."
"You can read about the meaning of these fields here and here."

Since the Readme.txt file "here and here" pointers lead to...never-never land,
(and the equivalent *.chm help file entry generates some obscure error message)
the following real pointers might perhaps be more helpful in clarifying the added fields gist :

Transition Types explained:

Transition Qualifiers explained:

(Thanks @billon who obligingly provided alternative pointers in the What's new entry...;-)

The instructions say:
"Run jcpicker.exe /ini and then close the program"
How do you Run that? In the folder there is an exe and an ini file, but not an exe /ini.

Midas on 2018-01-22 07:27

Type '[Windows key]+R', drag and drop 'jcpicker.exe' into the "Run" dialog, edit the the character string you just placed in the "Open" field, adding " /ini" at the end, click the "OK" button and presto... it's called a "Command Line Parameter".

Qupzilla is getting a little memory hungry. I have removed this from my favorites list.

If you want a barebones browser that uses little memory, I would recommend the latest version of K-Meleon.

smaragdus on 2017-02-04 16:56

@billon
At first look QupZilla version 2.1.0 seems to have improved significantly compared to version 2.0.2, but it uses far more resources compared to version 1.8.9. I did just a brief testing.

freakazoid on 2017-02-11 22:46

I can confirm what smaragdus said about v2.1.0.

Memory usage hovers around 120-140 MB RAM, but that is to be expected when the core engine is now updated to use QtWebEngine, which is powered by Chromium. To compare, I had an older version of Qupzilla v1.8.6 lying around and that used 210 MB RAM.

It's a good alternative to the existing Chromium-powered browsers, but if you're using a Chromium backend, you might as well use Chromium so you can gain access to the wealth of available extensions out there rather than some homebrewed versions that come with QupZilla.
