Snippy allows you to capture a particular region of the screen to the Windows clipboard, able to be pasted into any program that supports it. If cutting out a portion of an Internet Explorer window, the URL will also be copied to the clipboard. The region is an irregular shape by default, though you can capture a rectangular area holding down the Shift key while dragging.

| System Requirements: | Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP |
| Writes settings to: | Windows registry. But given the nature of the application and the small number of settings it saves, I think it can be accepted as portable. |
| Dependencies: | Snippy requires GDI+ to run. If you plan to run it on pre-WinXP systems, you will need to download GDIPLUS.DLL and include it in the same directory as the EXE. |
| License: | Freeware |
| How to extract: | Download the stand-alone EXE file to a folder of your choice. Launch Snippy.exe. |

A 'must have' for creators of training & support manuals when using XP. Great product |
AviScreen is an application for capturing screen activity in the form of AVI video or JPG/GIF/BMP images. Besides the usual options defining the capture area, AviScreen has a unique feature called "follow the cursor". Using this mode you can produce a video or image of relatively small dimensions while covering all mouse activity over the whole screen area. Does not record audio. AviScreen Portable is a portable wrapper for AviScreen.

Download the self-extracting EXE and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch AviScreenPortable.exe. Disable checking for new version (as the site is offline) by unchecking "Help" - "Automatic update checK" |

The download link is misleading, but many mirrors are on the web. I downloaded it from softpedia: |
FastStone Capture is a powerful, flexible and intuitive screen-capture utility. It allows you to capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, freehand-selected regions and scrolling windows/web pages. It has innovative features such as a floating Capture Panel, hotkeys, resizing, cropping, text annotation, printing, e-mailing, screen magnifier and many more.
Reported to function in Windows 7 and in Linux under WINE.
Note: I have made the last freeware version (V5.3) available for direct download. The license agreement does not prohibit redistribution and FastStone Capture went payware starting from V5.4

As a web developer and graphic designer, I've been uding this tool for over 4 years, most time on a daily basis alongside onenote. So far I have only tested a few other screenshot tools before and they were bloated with crappy UI. The 3 main reasons why I find it so great; friendly UI design, it's lite on resources and loaded with tons of extras all for free.

I've been running into some issues with Faststone Capture and Windows 8. When I attempt to draw on the screenshot and apply my changes, FastStone freezes.

The best screen capture tool by a country mile and I think I`ve tried them all. Simply brilliant, intuitive, easy to use and fast. |
WinSnap is a small utility for taking and editing screenshots. It can easily capture screenshots of non-rectangular windows with the background of your choice, automatically perform simple canvas transformations and coloring effects, add professional Photoshop-style shadows etc. Note that if you are running this on versions of Windows before XP, you will need to place GDIPLUS.DLL in the application folder.
Note: Starting from V2.x, WinSnap is no longer free for personal use. I have included a direct download for the last freeware version that I have. If you have a more recent freeware version, please post in forums.

I agree with CD. This is simply the best capture tool for Windows. |
Wink is a tutorial/presentation creation software, primarily aimed at creating tutorials on how to use software (like a tutor for MS-Word/Excel etc). Using Wink you can capture screenshots, add explanations boxes, buttons, titles etc. and generate a highly effective tutorial for your users. Wink Portable is a portable wrapper for Wink that writes settings to the application folder instead of the Windows registry. An alternative portable wrapper for Wink is available here.

The Softpedia/PortableApps download link doesn't actually contain Wink, just the wrapper/launcher (which you will still need). |
