@loin2kolpotoru
You are right. However, both 1.2 & 1.3 versions of NotePad SX are incompatible with Windows 8 (the program's GUI doesn't display correctly).

smaragdus on 2015-11-05 15:55

The missing forum thread- http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=74525
The free NotePad SX home page- http://www.rf1.net/software/notepad - there is a direct download link.

smaragdus on 2016-10-21 22:35

Notepad SX (http://www.rf1.net/software/notepad) is freeware but it is no longer developed and does not work properly on modern OS (at least on Windows 8- even compatibility mode doesn't help).
Notepad SX Pro (http://www.rf1.net/software/notepad_pro) is commercial.

Have been using Metapad and then Metapad360 for 15+ years
The range of text formatting tools are amazing.
My fav is "quote" Alt+Q, which inserts your custom string at col.1 of all selected lines/paragraphs/pages. Notepad++ does a similar thing BUT not all in col.1 ... Metapad makes it much easier to spot the "quoted" lines.
I am using "'o" , without the quotes, as my quote string.

bawldiggle on 2019-10-16 22:18

Forget to mention the "stickies" feature ...
10 shortcuts (Quick buffers) to paste your custom single line strings onto Metapad docs ...
** Settings (dlg) Buffers & Languages (tab/page)
hot keys Alt+<num> ... where <num> is (querty) 0 to 9
=OR=
selected text on saved file Metapad (config) -> Alt+Shift+<num> (ie qwerty-num)

My current preferred notepad replacement, after swapping the hideous default icon with the the vanilla one from notepad (TY, ResHack). Shame it doesn't do text case conversions, then it would be perfect -- as it is, I use a well known commercial editor for heavy duty text editing and nfoPad (totally portable from v1.56, see post @ http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5409) for nfo file viewing. For the rest, Win32Pad is lightning fast and perfectly fit for the common text checking/light editing tasks. I don't hesitate to recommend it!

Pax on 2010-12-27 03:37

@Midas, re: viewers for ANSI art (code page 437, extended ASCII)

Just thought I'd mention that some of these viewers contain translation fonts. A while back I extracted an ANSI/NFO viewer (don't recall which one... maybe getDiz), located the fonts and placed them in my system/fonts directory. This makes any editor ANSI-capable because the work is being done by an external font.

Thought I'd mention it in case your main editor supports font-toggling (toolbar button allowing a quick switch between two system fonts, example: metapad) in order to avoid switching editors just to view some of the text 'graphics'.

Midas on 2012-04-20 11:19

@Pax: great tip. Still, I'll be keeping NFOPad (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2164) 'cause it's convenient and I sometimes make adjustments to viewed files...

Steganos LockNote v1.0.5

Checker on 6 Oct 2015

LockNote works in two ways: it is a notepad that encrypts everything you put inside and also creates copies of itself when you drag-drop a text file into it. You end up with a new EXE that displays the content of that text file when run using the correct password.

Category:
Runs on:Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: None
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: No
License: GPL
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch LockNote.exe.
What's new? New:
  • Changed default font to Lucida Console to avoid 1/l - O/0 confusion.
  • Font typeface can be selected (Arial/Courier New/Lucida Console/Tahoma/Verdana).
  • Font size can be selected (9/10/12/14).
  • LockNote saves window size, font size and font typeface.
Fixed:
  • Find Dialog: Enter/Tab/Escape/Space/Ctrl-V keys work.
  • Find Dialog: Message displayed if search string is not found.
  • Find Dialog: F3 brings up Find Dialog or finds next result.

It would be nice if LockNote will have an option to increase font sizes.

codeNinja on 2015-10-05 08:17

For everyone still using this, be aware that version 1.0.5 still has some bugs.

User review from username al156243 in sourceforge posted this on 01/04/2015

"Locknote has a clean simple design. I would be very useful if not for a fatal bug where it occasionally fails to save changes. There is no error message or any other indication that it has failed. I have had it working perfectly for a long period of time and, for no reason, suddenly stops updating changes. If I use "save as" to create a new file, it will continue to work but will eventually fail again for no apparent reason. "

User review from username fireshadow500 in sourceforge posted this on 02/22/2013

"Be careful - LockNote silently fails to save data. You can tell by watching the Modified timestamp ... when it fails it doesn't change. I lost critical banking login details. I am using KeePass now, which isn't great for handling text but at least it is reliable."

review link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/locknote/reviews/

If you still want to use this, make backups when updating the content and always check if content is saved properly.

An alternative to this is fSekrit (smaller and works the same as lockNote) http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=784

fSekrit v1.4

  • Suggested by dasfx

fSekrit is a notepad that encrypts saved information in self-contained executable (.EXE) files. Created files don't need fSekrit and can be access by simply double-clicking the item and entering the correct password.

Uses the widely recognized 256-bit AES encryption and unencrypted data is never saved to disk, making it even more secure.

Functional in 64-bit.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: None
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware/Open Source (github)
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice.
  2. Create a new file called fSekrit.portable
  3. Launch fSekrit.exe.
Similar/alternative apps: CryptoTE
What's new? - fixed: long-standing bug where failing to save changes when closing fSekrit
with a modified document would cause fSekrit to exit, rather than notifying of
error and let user attempt to save again.
- fixed: saves are *finally* done properly, by saving to a temporary file and
replacing the current file only when all the file writing business is done.
- added: font selection dialog, no longer do you need to much around with the
registry to set another default font. The font is still not stored in your
document, though, and is single global per-user registry setting.
- added: "portable" mode, which (for now) means it will not use %TEMP% to store
it's temporary editor executable, but instead store it in the same folder as
the opened document. Registry is still used for font selection, though!
To enabel this feature, create a file called "fSekrit.portable" in the same
folder as the document you want to function in portable mode.
- added: URLs are now recognized and turned into hyperlinks.
- fixed: Read-only notes should be a lot more sane - changed from confusing
"make read-only" that half-worked to "Save As Read-only" that works :)
- fixed: Win9x and NT4 support has been broken since version 1.35. Release builds
are now done with an older compiler toolchain, and 9x/NT4 support is back :)

You can easily get the fsekrit program from the wayback machine at:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170214195855/http://f0dder.dcmembers.com/fsekrit.index.php it says it is also valid for Win7 use.

I found that the version of the zip for fsekrit on the waybackmachine for 2015 is valid at 49kbytes size, the some in later snapshots are only 10kbytes and do not work.
