Notepad SX (http://www.rf1.net/software/notepad) is freeware but it is no longer developed and does not work properly on modern OS (at least on Windows 8- even compatibility mode doesn't help). |

Crashes whenever I try to open a file, either through the File menu, or via the Ctrl-O keyboard shortcut. It does this on both of my PCs (XP Pro SP3).

minipad2 integrates many useful functions into one program including notepad, calculator, reminder, dictionary, launcher, address list, text template, and clipboard enhancement. All the contents are automatically saved while minimized or closed, and will re-open to the same state. The program can be freely switched between two styles: multi-page style and treeview style. When no longer used, it can be minimized to the system-tray, or hidden outside the desktop. Additional features include password protection and encryption.

New Options: Remember page scroll; Tree on right; Splitter width; Close note hotkey; Auto-record hotkey; Multi-clipboard: Filter all duplicate items; Add "Apply" button in the Options dialog. Add "Match Case" option in the "Search" dialog. Add two new text tools: Delete all empty lines; Leave one empty line. Add some new counts in the "Statistics" box. Alt+Up, Alt+Down: Used to move the selected item up or down (when the list has focus. Only support single-select), or move the selected node up or down (When the tree or tab-control has focus). My current preferred notepad replacement, after swapping the hideous default icon with the the vanilla one from notepad (TY, ResHack). Shame it doesn't do text case conversions, then it would be perfect -- as it is, I use a well known commercial editor for heavy duty text editing and nfoPad (totally portable from v1.56, see post @ http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5409) for nfo file viewing. For the rest, Win32Pad is lightning fast and perfectly fit for the common text checking/light editing tasks. I don't hesitate to recommend it!

@Pax: great tip. Still, I'll be keeping NFOPad (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=2164) 'cause it's convenient and I sometimes make adjustments to viewed files... |
LockNote works in two ways: it is a notepad that encrypts everything you put inside and also creates copies of itself when you drag-drop a text file into it. You end up with a new EXE that displays the content of that text file when run using the correct password.

For everyone still using this, be aware that version 1.0.5 still has some bugs. |
fSekrit is a notepad that encrypts saved information in self-contained executable (.EXE) files. Created files don't need fSekrit and can be access by simply double-clicking the item and entering the correct password.
Uses the widely recognized 256-bit AES encryption and unencrypted data is never saved to disk, making it even more secure.
Functional in 64-bit.

- fixed: long-standing bug where failing to save changes when closing fSekrit with a modified document would cause fSekrit to exit, rather than notifying of error and let user attempt to save again. - fixed: saves are *finally* done properly, by saving to a temporary file and replacing the current file only when all the file writing business is done. - added: font selection dialog, no longer do you need to much around with the registry to set another default font. The font is still not stored in your document, though, and is single global per-user registry setting. - added: "portable" mode, which (for now) means it will not use %TEMP% to store it's temporary editor executable, but instead store it in the same folder as the opened document. Registry is still used for font selection, though! To enabel this feature, create a file called "fSekrit.portable" in the same folder as the document you want to function in portable mode. - added: URLs are now recognized and turned into hyperlinks. - fixed: Read-only notes should be a lot more sane - changed from confusing "make read-only" that half-worked to "Save As Read-only" that works :) - fixed: Win9x and NT4 support has been broken since version 1.35. Release builds are now done with an older compiler toolchain, and 9x/NT4 support is back :) |

I found that the version of the zip for fsekrit on the waybackmachine for 2015 is valid at 49kbytes size, the some in later snapshots are only 10kbytes and do not work.
