AngelWriter would easily be my favourite fast-starting RTF editor if it were possible to switch off its pesky spell checking (that keeps underlining with those wavy red lines every word not written in English) and if it were possible to change the standard font (Times New Roman, Size 12) with which the program starts every time. As it is, I'll stick to the latest "Jarte" (ever since it got the new "Show Quick Bar" option which makes it easier to use now via a traditional buttons bar instead of just the drop-down menus).

No spell check other than highlighting words it thinks are misspelled as you type. Auto-corrects words with mixed case with no option (that I could see) to turn that off, making it impossible to type custom names and terms. Doesn't let you enter custom font sizes.

Might be ok for knocking out the occasional note, but falls ridiculously short of being considered a real word processor.

@pelotti & webfork: Abiword (www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=493) includes a filter to import WordPerfect files, and, imho, is more suitable than LO Writer as a WordPad replacement.

dany on 2011-10-12 20:34

FYI: Avast wants to run Q-jot in it's (imho increasingly annoying) sandbox. virustotal.com says it's all cool, only ClamAV reports it as a PUA, Possibly Unwanted App. It's packed with ASPack, which adds some reverse-engineering protection. I've used q-jot for almost 2 years now without any troubles and only recently it started triggering alerts. It's the packer (ASPack) used that triggers the alert, as it 'kinda obfuscates' the internal code.
It's a false positive, PUA's can be potentially malicious but if you're familiar with the app, like with Q-jot, such alerts can be ignored. Keyword here is 'Possibly'.

@donald: File-corruption has happened but not often. And if Word can't open them, Q-jot never failed on me in those moments and I just save it as .rtf then, I can always convert at work. No problems with the open dialog either.

@donald,

Nice interface and small size. Doesn't have a spell checker though and sometimes fails to save in the doc format; docx doesn't work at all. Check your work, it's possible to lose everything when this happens.

One word: abandonware -- wish someone would take it up to iron the tiny niggles it still has... It would then be absolutely perfect!

KingMudkip on 2009-10-18 15:49

You can now download a .zip of Q10 from the site & not have to mess around with the .paf file.

Hey, has anybody tried this thing under Win7?

I tried this a week or so ago and wasn't really impressed.
It might be great software but it's just not for me.

One thing I just this second noticed though was a 5MB profile folder in my application data folder under the name Greyfirst.

Maybe I used the wrong settings but it should also be pointed out I think

Tashi on 2008-01-04 19:04

I've used this software for quite a while. It is specifically for writing screenplays. So if you want to write a script for your short film or a screenplay contest, this software rocks. It is feature rich. Otherwise if you are looking for something browser related, or a word processor, best to look elsewhere.

A Pretty good, basic editor, doesn't handle images but if you need an RTF editor this one's o.k.
Don't expect too much and make sure you download the utilities.
