Context Menu Editor vn/a

Andrew Lee on 12 Feb 2013

Context Menu Editor can view and delete links to programs on your context menus (the popup menus you see when you right-click). Context Menu Editor does not delete the programs, it just removes them from your menus. Menu deletions cannot be undone so please use with care - you may need to reinstall your software if you want them back. Context Menu Editor can view and delete menu items for right clicking on files, right clicking on folders and right clicking in Internet Explorer.

This tool has been on my computer for years now - its a missing system program that everyone should have in their Control Panel for ANY Windows 9x-XP install. Fixes one of the worst problems with Microsoft: every program trying to dig itself in and run at startup whether you want it or not.

Author is quick to point out his program isn't necessary for Vista. Go to Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools, and then click on Manage Startup Programs.

Total must-have on XP.

InstallSpy v2.0

webfork on 2 Sep 2012

InstallSpy tracks changes to the registry and file system, and also record all shell notification events (e.g. media inserted), when a program is installed, uninstalled, or run. This can warn you of programs trying to install new services, programs that are set to run on reboot, changes to your home page, etc.

Official site no longer hosts anything about InstallSpy. Linking to Softpedia.

Writes settings to: Windows registry. But given the nature of the application, I think it can be accepted as portable.
