Synopsis: fSekrit is a notepad that encrypts data using 256-bit AES. Notes are saved as self-contained EXE files that are password-protected. Unencrypted data is never saved to disk, making it even more secure.
Writes settings to: None
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Create a new file called "fSekrit.portable" and launch fSekrit.exe.
Stealth [?]: Yes
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware
System Requirements: Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7
What's new: >>
- fixed:  long-standing bug where failing to save changes when closing fSekrit
with a modified document would cause fSekrit to exit, rather than notifying of
error and let user attempt to save again.
- fixed:  saves are *finally* done properly, by saving to a temporary file and
replacing the current file only when all the file writing business is done.
- added:  font selection dialog, no longer do you need to much around with the
registry to set another default font. The font is still not stored in your
document, though, and is single global per-user registry setting.
- added: "portable" mode, which (for now) means it will not use %TEMP% to store
it's temporary editor executable, but instead store it in the same folder as
the opened document. Registry is still used for font selection, though!
To enabel this feature, create a file called "fSekrit.portable" in the same
folder as the document you want to function in portable mode.
- added: URLs are now recognized and turned into hyperlinks.
- fixed: Read-only notes should be a lot more sane - changed from confusing
"make read-only" that half-worked to "Save As Read-only" that works :)
- fixed: Win9x and NT4 support has been broken since version 1.35. Release builds
are now done with an older compiler toolchain, and 9x/NT4 support is back :)

[Anonymous] RAMMost of the email servers now reject .exe files

So this can't be sent via email
 [2006-07-12 12:46]

[Anonymous] [BOT]FluffyYou could always change the extension to .zap or something, then change it back to .exe when it's downloaded. [2006-07-12 20:28]

[Anonymous] BarHopperSometimes even changing .exe to another extension still doesn't help, as the header of the file still shows it as an .exe. If you zip the file (no need for passwords or compressing, because its already encrypted), then most anyone can open it, even XP includes zip support by default.

And if a place doesn't happen to support a zip file (or rar or 7z or whatever format you use), you can also join your zip (or rar or 7z) with another file (say, an image or mp3) and then upload the image or mp3.
Just type the following into a console window:
copy /b b1.mp3 /b + b2.zip bbb.mp3
The first file should be what the main file should be (and what the output will appear like). The second should be the zip or rar or 7z. The /b means its a binary file. Once you have your output, you can play it in your mp3 player, or if its an image, you can open it with an image viewer. Rename it to .zip and you can double click and open it with your default program or any other zip program. Easily transferred by email.

[Anonymous] simonrlRef. version 1.35 as of 23/12/07.
If I try to create a new file starting from a read-only one, the new file is still read-only and no text can be input nor imported, even if the availability of the option "make read-only" seems to suggest the opposite.
Also, wouldn't it be useful to add the option to make a read-only file writable again, for example by adding the option "make it writable" for read-only files?

[Anonymous] Infestedtassadar-x17This needs updating. version 1.35 is available on the site. This is a must have program [2009-01-14 15:06]

[Anonymous] KingMudkipWhenever I use this I get a error when saving. Any ideas? [2009-10-22 12:42]

[Anonymous] KingMudkipFigured out the error; you can't save a file in the same directory as fSekrit without it losing your data. Be warned! [2009-10-22 15:33]

[Anonymous] LyxThe stuff about "unencrypted data is never saved to disk" is most probably misleading. As long as the data isn't also encrypted or wiped in ram, it may be written to disk - its called "swapping" and "virtual memory".

As for exe files not being sendable via email: Your provider sucks, and you're a moron for supporting their service by using it. Its the recipient? Well, then the same applies to the recipient.
 [2009-12-10 18:54]

[User] CodesAway@Lyx, I would hope most providers don't allow sending exes, I know gMail doesn't (even if you zip the exe) - it's for security. [2009-12-10 21:39]

[Anonymous] LyxRight, castrate the net because of idiots - great logic. Next up: Forbid all executable packers, because they COULD be used to obscure a trojan... oh wait, "Anti"-Virus manufacturers are already doing that.

World to idiot: there is no solution for people like you, except of common sense and education.

[Anonymous] WebforkGreat program -- simple, elegant, and easy. Note that I do wish in addition to lengthy technical details that the author would just provide the source for download.

KingMudkip's overwrite issue appears to have been fixed in the latest version, as well as a few other problems alluded to in the comments.

[Anonymous] KimmyOh ho! Is this a good replacement for LockNote, then? Why don't any of these programs support Unicode away? [2009-12-11 18:04]

[Anonymous] Infestedtassadar-x17I don't think this is exactly a replacement for Locknote (or vice versa)

fSekrit is smaller then Locknote (57KB vs 296KB)

Just wish that fSekrit was open sourced like Locknote is
 [2009-12-12 08:08]

[Anonymous] f0dderfSekrit will - eventually - be opensourced, when I get around to cleaning up the source code. Unicode has been on the ToDo list for a while, but other issues have been more pressing, and unicode does crank up the executable size a bit, as well as requires some Win9x compatibility testing.

Anyway, it's only by chance I saw the discussion here, if you have requests or comments it's generally a lot smarter to post them at the DonationCoder forum where I *will* see them :)

[Anonymous] Infestedtassadar-x17Would like to also point out that the download link (http://f0dder.dcmembers.com/downloads/fsekrit.zip) isn't correct and gives a "404 page not found.)

Try: http://f0dder.dcmembers.com/fsekrit/fsekrit.zip

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
