Synopsis: SmartSniff allows you to capture TCP/IP packets that pass through your network adapter, and view the captured data as sequence of conversations between clients and servers. You can view the TCP/IP conversations in ASCII mode (for text-based protocols, like HTTP, SMTP, POP3 and FTP.) or as hex dump. (for non text-based protocols, like DNS).

On Win2K/XP, SmartSniff is able to capture TCP/IP packets using raw sockets. This method has some limitations and problems, but it does not require the installation of a separate capture driver.

A better way to capture TCP/IP packets is to install the open-source WinPcap capture driver. This works on Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003, and functions better than the "raw sockets" method.
Writes settings to: Application folder
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch smsniff.exe. Optionally, add IPToCountry.csv in the same directory as SmartSniff to show the Country of origin for each IP address.
Stealth [?]: Yes
License: Freeware
System Requirements: Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7
What's new: >>
    • Added support for .csv files in 'Save Packet Summaries' option.
    • Added 'Add Header Line To CSV/Tab-Delimited File' option. When this option is turned on, the column names are added as the first line when you export to csv or tab-delimited file.

[Anonymous] RoddersgInstead of using WinPCap and having it on your computer (making it non-Portable) try the applications from http://www.packetstuff.com. it is a port of Ethereal, nMap, TCPDump etc without using the WinPCap library and is truly portable. [2006-07-20 07:47]

[Anonymous] raphaelYeah tell'm Roddersg..., at the risk of having several day's without new apps I would suggest a better screening method, so quality might improve. At this moment I'm getting tired of all the lameware showing up. How about implementing a sort of voting system that will remove apps that come below 0. [2006-12-05 04:29]

[Anonymous] El Mustachiorapheal.. this software is not "lameware".. I use it all the time so does many of my coleages. apps that become below 0 are ones that are malware, adware and spyware.

i wish we could vote who could post online.. to avoid ridiculous claims, and simply stupid statements.

oh and one more thing this is Andrews website he can post whatever he wants.

[Anonymous] dooberDownload.com has Packetstuff. It appears to be truly portable but the tools included are old. http://www.download.com/PacketStuff-Network-Toolkit/3000-2085_4-10428838.html [2007-12-19 06:24]

[Anonymous] linuxampWireshark (ethereal) now distributes a "portableapps" version

I'll also submit this to the forum.

[Anonymous] chaneulinuxamp, the "portableapps" version is not truly portable, because the first time launched it install WinPCap [2008-01-27 14:11]

[Anonymous] dpsfSmartSniff has 3 different capture mechanisms: Raw sockets,
WinPcap, and the MS Network Monitor Driver.

[Anonymous] RobI have been using smartsniff for some time now and I find it very reliable and useful! So from me a thumbs up, definitely no lameware nor malware. OK not as portable as a standalone application, still can be used without WinPCAP as indicated by DPSF thereby portable usage is possible! Export is also re-usable (when you now how to read it, thanks to the designer for supplying me with the requied information)! [2009-03-06 03:20]

[Anonymous] Psytechnicchaneu, some info for you:

PortableFreeware excels in the number of available apps being that it has no input on the application development, it simply catalogues them and will catalogue freeware and open-source without discretion.

PortableApps work on open-source much more and there is a tighter regulation on releases. All apps from PortableApps have a 'app_portable.exe' NSIS script created executable frontloader with instructions for registry handling and application information disposal and being that they are the creators of the released portable versions, they can offer support on any issues of portability.

Although WinPCap is installed on launch of Wireshark Portable, it is uninstalled and cleaned up after the program closes. This is the purpose of the 'app_portable.exe' launcher, made by the PortableApps developers.

I am not a PortableApps developer or even an advocate, I am simply a guy who knows what the hell is going on in the programs I use. If you don't know about portability, don't comment on it.

A portable program is one that can run without having to install anything. If wireshark needs to install something its not portable.

[Anonymous] Zadadka@Kermode : Portability describes the ability to carry and run an application from (eg) a USB stick, if necessary sharing Host resources. You are confused between that and Standalone applications. [2010-03-17 18:06]

All HTML tags will be removed from your comment. URLs (http, https, ftp) will be automatically detected and hyperlinked. I reserve the right to delete irrelevant, frivolous or offensive comments. For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
