Synopsis: BartPE enables you to create a self-contained version of Windows on CD/DVD that runs "live" from the CDROM. It includes full network support and read/write access to NTFS volumes, which is great for diagnostic or troubleshooting purposes. It also includes a good number of built-in apps, and many more can be added via the plugin mechanism. Note: You need the original Windows Installation CDROM in order to build the "live" CD.
Writes settings to: Application folder
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch the program by double-clicking on pebuilder.exe.
License: Freeware
System Requirements: Win2K / WinXP

[Anonymous] DGGreat Program, everyone should have a CD that boots to XP. Especially for emergencies. Your "original Windows Installation CDROM" NEEDS to have Service Pack 2.

3D Tools? This is more files/folders or at least misc/other. It's an O/S program, not graphics.

[Anonymous] Andrew LeeMy apologies. I have fixed the subcategory value. [2006-06-15 23:07]

[Anonymous] aone should note.. E-machines, and i believe others dont give out the original windows disks they give only restore disks only for e-machines computer, so those wont work with bartPE, because i've tried.. damn e-machines. craputors alright. [2007-04-28 14:55]

[Anonymous] RichardI finally decided to give BartPE a try so that I could make a bootable Ghost 8 CD, but when I would go to boot the finished CD, the damn thing would freeze at the "please wait" bar every time.

I spent my whole weekend trying to get it to work.

No matter what options I enabled/disabled and no matter what files I added or removed, it would still freeze at that "please wait" bar.

What a waste of time!

I ended up going with HawkPE.
Unfortunately, it doesn't enable CD/DVD burning support in Ghost, but at least the thing boots.

[Anonymous] RichardWell, I decided to try one more thing before giving up on BartPE.

I tried using my friend's Windows XP disk instead of mine and it worked.

My disk was version 2600.1152 (SP2)

and his disk was version 2600.1106 (SP1)

I can't believe I was unable to find any support anywhere related to freezing with certain XP versions.
BartPE has been around a long time now ... it seems like someone must have known about this problem.

Hopefully I don't encounter any more mystery bugs!

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
