Webfork: For users or admins that are on a network and want to see what's available. Since many network services are made invisible behind firewalls, you often need specific IP addresses -- Network Scan helps you find them.
Beginning users: Select Options - Auto Detect Local IP Range, and select the network adapter that's connected to your network. Then click Start Scanning in the main window to get a quick idea if the program will be useful or not. [2007-06-11 13:37]
Roland: I'd be cautious using anything to do network discovery via pings. You don't want to "ping of death" your own network from the inside, after all. I've seen ping storms bring corporate networks to their knees. [2008-05-23 09:34]
paul: In addition to using the option "/ini", you can also now use "/xml" to save settings in an xml file when running on a hard drive an if you do not want to store things in the registry.
The /xml is a much better option since if netscan is run from a removable USB drive, it writes settings to an xml file on the drive by default. [2008-10-22 11:06]
Mike: This is the best network scanner I've ever used. I use it at work to see which IP addresses are in use. [2009-03-02 11:12]
oTHEr: SCARY! A few notes:
Love the 'Auto-Detect', helps a Lot! Two NICs/Networks, Local (mine) and Building - Found both, scanned separately - Nice!
Very thorough, among my best 'Quick-and-Dirty' tools; Not a full 'Pen Test', but a Great Start!
Thanks for the '/xml' tip, @ paul!
It did NOT set off any of my Security! (have to look into that! 0.o)
SoftPerfect has several other Free Tools that look interesting, but I'm not sure about 'Portability'/Stealth... [2009-03-03 06:56]
Fred: Wow, pretty damn nice!
Would be cool if it showed if admin shares (like c$ - admin share of C:\) [2009-03-15 21:39]
Imran: Does it leave any trace on the host computer? while viewing the secret shared resources? [2009-05-31 21:46]

All HTML tags will be removed from your comment. URLs (http, https, ftp) will be automatically detected and hyperlinked. I reserve the right to delete irrelevant, frivolous or offensive comments. For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
