GIMP Portable v2.8.4

webfork on 13 Feb 2013

It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert-quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP Portable is a modified version of The GIMP optimized for flash memory. Also available is an add-on which adjusts GIMP's layout to mimic Photoshop and switched on single-window mode.

Anyone know of any files that could be deleted from this that could make it a little smaller?
I only have a small Flash drive and most programs have loads of extra files I wouldn't need but looking in this directory has me stumped.

Where is the gimp-help.xml file?

winpenpack prepared already x-gimp 2.4 - no excuse for portable freeware collection team to ignore it

DeepFraught 2008-02-15 22:40

@JackL - thanks for the tip.
One major difference in file size, v2.4.4rev6 from winpenpack is 3.6 times larger at 65MB, while this version is 18MB.
Separate note, GIMPshop is still based on 2.2.8 and at 18MB.

If you go to http://portableapps.com he also has two extras for this. One is a single window plugin so GIMP looks less like three independent windows and the other makes GIMP look more like Photoshop.

Damn... Why does 2.6.4 keep the image window opened even when there's no image loaded? And why does it close all three windwos whenever I close any of them? It's a major step back comparing to earlier versions. Freedom went to trash. I can't customise my desktop, instead I'm forced to use the defaults and unable to manage windows indepedently! It's inacceptable.

Yeah, I also used to like it... but every Windows version is slower, latest 2.6.6 is a disgrace... startup times are equivalent to OO... bloat...

an alternative to this is http://www.inkscape.org .

Would be interested to know whether other people find that gegl-0.0 is left behind, x-gimp does delete this on exit.

In regards to size portable apps performs upx on Gimp to decrease size, x-gimp doesn't but will work, alternatively download both and place gimp into x-gimp's folder.

Anyone else having problems with this 2.6.11 version?
On start-up it gives a scriptfu.exe crash error and then it will not recognize or open any type graphics i tried. I am using Widows 7 Home Premium 64Bit. I had to go back to the 2.6.10 version.

M.C. 2010-10-09 05:40

I have now tried the 2.6.11 version on Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit with the same result, Scriptfu.exe crashes on program startup.

@M.C: My copy of GIMP Portable 2.6.11 does launch, but I have this problem:

I'll downgrade to 2.6.10 Rev 2 immediately after posting this message.

Haleth 2010-10-10 00:43

Yes, I have the same error with script-fu not running.

i have just discovered GIMP. i am a Photoshop enthusiast, but must admit, GIMP is extremely reliable, light, and filled with all kinds of options. Some of the features closely resemble that of Photoshop. Overall, im very impressed with GIMP. If you are familiar with Photoshop, you'll be able to figure your way around in GIMP. Great app.!

Was thrilled to see GIMP in popular use at a tech company I visited. Evidently familiarity with this program is turning into a marketable skill.

v2.8 boosts quite a few drastic improvements. ArsTech has a writeup: http://arst.ch/tny

v2.8.2 - Works great on Win 8 CP. I'm running it on an Asus netbook with an SSD and 1.8 GHz Atom. It loads/starts slow, but once up and running, it performs as if it were on a full desktop.
