Synopsis: DataTool provides ad-hoc SQL query capabilities for any database via ODBC. It supports automatic sorting, inline data modification in the grid, BCP test data creation and import/export.

Note: The application home page seems to be gone. I have added direct download for this entry, so just click on the "Download" link above if you want to try out this app.

Writes settings to: Windows registry. But that is only to remember the last data source used, so I am accepting it as portable.
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch the program by double-clicking on DataTool.exe.
License: Freeware
System Requirements: Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP

[Anonymous] JonEven though this has been available for 10 years now, I have searched far and wide and never found it. Finally I can get rid of that stinking SQLRunner.exe . This is the best piece of freeware I have seen in a long time. [2006-12-15 12:27]

[Anonymous] ThorThis app is ok but I don't necessarily prefer it to SQLRunner. I like the left hand nav table browser that SQLRunner has. Also, I hate how DataTool always puts a "sort" on a query to open a table.

What people really need in a SQL tool is a "history" function that lets you retrieve previously ran queries. This feature is badly needed and lacking in every free SQL tool, including this one.

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
