knattefnattetjatte: Probably the best media player. I have not yet come across a file, that VLC have not been able to play. I have not installed any codecs on my new laptop.
You can create a .bat file to launch VLC in portable mode. Create portable.bat in the program directory. Open portable.bat in Notepad and copy-paste "vlc.exe --no-plugins-cache --config=vlcrc" and save it. Launch VLC by double clicking on portable.bat [2006-03-14 06:50]

Danix: You can find another portable edition of VideoLAN here:
(X-VideoLAN 0.8.6) http://www.winpenpack.com/main/index.php?mod=none_Files&dpath=misc/Files/2%20-%20X-Software/3%20-%20Multimedia/
(Please select the english language from the right "Hot news" block to have the web site translated in english) [2006-12-12 04:46]
Brett: I like vlc but it puts a folder under c documents and settings owner and application data. It puts a cache folder and a plugins .dat file. You delete the folder but every time you start Vlc it comes back. [2007-01-07 12:14]
fasola: @Brett
use X-VideoLAN - read Danix post. [2007-01-08 10:06]
Andrew Lee: You probably didn't enter the command-line parameters correctly: "--no-plugins-cache --config=vlcrc". I just tested with the command-line parameters, and nothing is written to the user profile folder. [2007-01-09 04:37]
GBJ: It's a GREAT media player, but to get the truly portable version, download it from: http://portableapps.com/news/2007-05-03_-_vlc_portable_0.8.6b [2007-05-05 06:31]
LH: The main problem with VLC is that you cannot bring up the brightness, contrast and gamma controls as there is no support for displaying them in the skins (see the VLC forums for posts about this). The only way to enable the "Extended GUI" feature is to run "VLC Player (alt)" from the Start menu, which just has the following switches enabled: --intf wx --no-wx-embed. Until they fix this, I've stopped using VLC as it's a real pain. [2007-06-15 11:52]
Myself: The problem with VLC player is it is really slow at playing DVDs, I wish they work on it in near future. Because it is great at playing anything else other than DVDs [2007-10-14 01:48]
Eldad: The official VLC site is no longer showing the portable version. This version can be found on: http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable
In it you can download the portable version and it self exreacting but as PORTALBE to a file of your choice.
Also it is only 9.8MB and not 32MB. [2007-12-14 04:18]
Hawk: He it run ".mov" files? [2008-01-04 06:04]
Joel: Its a fantastic player!
It even reads ISO!! Play on the desktop! Gets Wallpaper shots!
Simple and easy to use but excellent! GREAT!
Thanks guys! [2008-02-06 14:19]
Ashghost: @Eldad: The portable version is still at the Videolan website, in either 7-zip or zip archives. The issue with portableapps.com apps is that Haller generally just adds a launcher and a wrapper on them that allows them to write to the registry, then cleans up when you shut them down. If the app crashes, the registry modifications are still there. Also, I find it slightly disingenuous of him to release portable versions of apps that have their own portable versions: VLC, Pidgin, Notepad++, Filezilla, KeePass, and MPlayer and I think one or two others that I don't use all have official portable releases. Knattefnattetjatte describes how to make your own simple launcher above, and this will make your VLC truly portable.
Also, the description says 32MB _uncompressed_ [2008-02-28 16:21]
Portable Paul: ASHghost, thanks for that info. I had been rather blindly following the portableapps.com web site. i've seen others do it, advertising thinstalled versions of apps that are already portable.. didn't think to question haller. thanks for the info. [2008-03-02 14:31]
Sture: VLC v0.8.6d works well! I'm using Win98SE.
This newer e version terminates with "You must run this on Win2000/XP/Vista". Not so good. [2008-03-15 15:25]
joby_toss: You can even stream your desktop over http or LAN:

a: originally I couldn't find any use out this program, although I'm a media player classic fan, I think the interface sucked, and it doesn't play all media correctly for instance .midi doesn't play at all, flv video skips, and the interface always resets itself to the default view. Although after some playing with I found that I can capture radio streams, the downside is the songs don't play while this is in progress and it's all saved to one file. (so I have no idea what the song is called and I have to cut the file into pieces) it does display what is being played in the status bar, (whats that about anyway!, I would rather save the songs to separate files with the names displayed from the status bar!) ok short rant. Underpower!: Best thing about it, is it even plays file without format!
(it scan file headers and detect the file format! smart!)
Even cool, it plays unfinish download AVI and others too :) [2008-07-17 06:52]
dug_down_deep: Yeah, this program is great. I've been using it for a while now, and no problems, except that some MP3s don't play. I always assume that's because they've got DRM embedded, since they play in Windows Media Player. It only happens rarely, though. [2008-08-21 08:44]
Milou: vlc.exe --no-plugins-cache --config=vlcrc
Doesn't work with 0.92 version [2008-09-16 11:09]
Steu: How to make it portable?
The instructions are not working for 0.9.x version! [2008-09-18 05:17]
Diego: It worked for me.
VLC starts also with a simple doubleclick without those options (likely non in a portable way).
Tested on 0.9.2 [2008-09-18 09:44]
Jake: v0.9.2 is regularly crashing on me. I'm going back to v0.8.6i until the new version is stabilized... [2008-09-19 15:44]
Gmacri: Yes 0.92 version have some problems...
I'm waiting for the next update. [2008-09-25 11:55]
Rilwis: I try to run VLC with parameters "--no-plugins-cache --config=vlcrc" and see it saves its settings in file vlcrc in app's folder, but it also create a folder "vlc" in user's application data. Can you check it please, it's not clean. [2008-09-28 13:01]
Lyndon: **0.9.3 available from "http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Video-Players/VideoLAN-Client.shtml"
**Install and copy files from "c:\program files\VideoLAN\vlc"
**Run with parameters "--no-plugins-cache --config=vlcrc --no-media-library"
**One file is left: "c:\documents and settings\user\Application Data\vlc\vlc-qt-interface.ini"
**Portable apps forum indicates "guys at #videolan say there is no direct option to move or prevent qt interface file formation" (credit paranoidal) [2008-09-29 18:58]
Guest: Adding to what Lyndon wrote, there are actually two files left and not just one:

Dave: I recently discovered VLC, and love it for its versatility.
However, i find it really frustrating that I cannot find an option anywhere in preferences to stop the screen from disappearing as soon as the playback is stopped. I know it can be done as I managed to do it before (it has a black screen with the cone icon in the centre) but cannot remember how I did it!
Can anyone help? How do I keep the screen open (in smallscreen and fullscreen modes) when the player is stopped? Thanks in advance :-) [2008-10-19 10:15]
MasterBlaster: @Lyndon and @Dave
1.) The vlc-qt-interface.ini problem. Change in Edit Preferences under Interface the Modul from Standard to Skinable Interface and VLC is 100 % Stealth. Dont activate a Extra-Module.
2.) Dave - use skinable Interface as standard modul and all your problems are gone. Look at your preferences.

Amy: The new VLC has bugs.
I have a file that works fine on VLC 0.9.4, but does not work on 0.9.6. It's an FLV file I downloaded off of youtube. If you use flv files, do not download this new version, because your files might not play. [2008-11-09 19:28]
Geddich Nixan: Have the same problem with FLV files and the version 0.9.6. When I try to play an FLV with 0.9.6 it simply closes without further ado. I have the impression that VLC is getting worser. They have problems with the Win version of the software and when there is finally a new release it is buggy. Sad thing. It used to be THE media player but it is not any longer. I hope it will change in the future 'cause I like the software very much. [2008-11-10 02:48]
Amy: Yeah, After they hit 0.9 they went down hill. I started using smplayer, and it seems to be good. [2008-11-10 05:41]
a: Au contraire, I find 0.9 has much better support for FLV files. I just tested a FLV video from youtube and VLC played it just fine. I think version 0.9 has vastly improved over previous versions, it comes with a better interface and better options. My complaint is that it still doesn't play .midi files, what are the holding back on? [2008-11-18 12:50]
Jeremy: Thanks MasterBlaster. I'm running Vlc from .bat now and it leaves nothing in the C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data folder ;) [2008-11-21 04:06]
Jeremy: Uh oh, looks like I spoke too soon. I was watching a .flv and "ml.xspf" was left in the application data folder [2008-11-21 04:11]
Andy: Hey, Amy, go to the VLC website and re-download and re-install version 0.9.6, it seems they've picked up their little problem that was causing your files not to play (I had the same problem, when I intially downloaded the older 0.9.6 install file from filehippo.com instead of getting it from the videolan website), and they've now fixed the problem. Works fine for me now with the latest version.
Anyway, u should still try to update to 0.9.6, cos there are 2 critical security issues with 0.8.6 that can be exploited by hackers (now fixed in 0.9.6). [2008-11-22 11:25]
Scott: To make batch file drag-n-dropable, change batch file to read:
start /D"%~d0%~p0" vlc.exe %* --no-plugins-cache --config=vlcrc
Also works if you make batch file registered app for file extensions (e.g. register as app for .MP4 extension, and any MP4s double clicked in windows explorer will open in VLC with portable settings).
Only tested on XP. Shouldn't work on 98 etc. [2009-05-10 08:06]
Bob Brown: I've had nothing but problems with version 9. If you scroll thru a video it takes forever for the video to catch up to the audio. Videos play slugishly, dropping frames. I went back to version 8 and it works great. [2009-06-06 22:06]
cosmin: not even the version at portableapps.com is truly portable.
on vista it creates a folder: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\vlc
I hate applications that insist on creating files and folders all over the place. [2009-07-27 08:15]
Hugh_H: I've used VLC for a long time and I like it, BUT...
I've noticed that after I install it on a workstation (which I recycle often), I start seeing Explorer.exe "blow-up" with "unable to write memory..." errors, and if VLC is left running without doing anything, it tends to runaway with the processor, up to 50% of one core.
Also, VLC doesn't do H.264 and other HiDEF formats well as it doesn't use more than one core/processor (while Media Player Classic does).
I do like being able to change the play speed, and I use VLC because it plays some files that MPC does not (and vice versa), so in the grotesque miasma that the proliferation of media codecs has generated, you need multiple players to play most media (plus 100+ codecs loaded!). [2009-07-27 17:13]
a: It's ridiculous ain't it? that's why and html tags are going to be nightmare for webmasters and users alike. Anyways the portable apps version is no bigger than 30 MB but it comes at a cost as my anti-virus is struggling to scan all these dll files that vlc is loading into memory. I no it's partially because it's been upx compressed, but I don't see why vlc can't just load these plugins as they are needed. [2009-07-27 20:13]
a: Looks like some of my comment got scrapped. to clarify I was referring to "video" and "audio" html 5 tags in my first post. [2009-07-27 20:16]
a: I can name 10 audio and video codecs that I'll actually ever come in contact with. I know the average user will likely be even less than that. If they ever wanna be a big contender for the average user, they should focus less on supporting every codec in the world and work more on usability and accessibility. but than again it wouldn't be VLC with a ton of codecs. Funny it still can't play midi files, not a big deal and not a big surprise either seeing as they just hit 1.0 version. [2009-07-27 20:32]
Edwin: Not working in Windows 98se. Why neglecting it? [2009-07-29 11:53]
9xfan: KernelEx 4.0 Final enables VLC 1.0 to run on Win98SE. [2009-07-29 19:40]
chuggo: 9xfan is incorrect. According to the videolan.org website for
Windows 95/98/Me, VLC 0.8.6 is the latest release with support for these operating systems. [2009-09-07 13:39]
Chris: Actual version is now 1.0.2 [2009-10-11 14:14]
bhavesh: i m using vlc media player for multicasting purpose.
i want to make a batch file of that setting. [2009-11-22 07:31]
Anthony: try this :-) .. http://www.allplayer.org [2010-01-17 09:28]
Wayne: No, DO NOT try ALLPlayer. I just did (per Anthony's recommendation). The first movie I tried did not have any sound and did not display any subtitles. Maybe there were settings that needed adjustment (for those that have time). But why bother. VLC worked fine "out of the (virtual) box". [2010-06-23 04:17]
