[Anonymous] ais the newer versions more/as stable as winpooch 5.10, because last time i tried the 6.x releases (i think it was release candidtae) windows shutdown with a critical system error... but winpooch 5.10 i've been using for nearly a year without problems, matter fact it works really good.. but with some trial and error after i set up appropriate filters, and disabled debuging privelage.. i diffently recommend winpooch, but which version is up too you. [2006-12-16 10:16]

[Anonymous] BillI've downloaded both the zip file and first got an error that it couldn't find the language files (which seemed to be fixed when I renamed the subdirectory to Languages instead of languages"). The next error is "Driver installation failed(error=3): The system cannot find the path specified" after which it exits. Tried 3 times. Installed the binary executable into my program directory and moved it to usb drive but had other error messages come up. Interesting that this is supposed to be a full release. On the logo before it closes it shows BETA 0.6. [2006-12-30 00:52]

[Anonymous] MetalArendI've had two errors too when I first started it.
The first one is about the language, but you can set this in your settings menu, or just leave it in plain English.
The second one is indeed about the driver, but it was saying (like every other time when I start the program as a portable app) that the driver wasn't detected, and thus temporarily installed!
Looks to me that this second step wasn't able to succeed on your computer, Bill?
I'm now running it, seems to work, kinda cool to have a registry watchdog that's completely free and semi-portable :p

[Anonymous] cyclefoxHi Bill, hi MetalArend,
I also tried and testet a lot with winpooch. My successful installationpath:

1. installation on c:\...
2. copy directory to USB
3. uninstall/delete installation on c:\...
Then 2 DLLs were missing...
3. copy them to USB (FreeImage.dll, libclamav.dll, think they were in \windows\system32...
4. tried to start as NoAdmin. Shit, => driver can not be installed (like Bills message). If the driver is not installed on the computer, and winpooch is portable, you must logon as admin to run winpooch, because it must temporariliy install the driver.

And now... good luck!

[Anonymous] Fox ColeI installed this, but I also have portable ClamWin and would like to run it with Winpooch... however, Winpooch looks in the registry and decides that ClamWin isn't installed, so won't use it. There's no option to just navigate to a program of my choice. Winpooch won't even use its bundled ClamAV, again thinking the program isn't installed.

Perhaps this may require some coordination with the Winpooch devs to come up with an acceptable fix or workaround... at least to let the user choose the AV program location.

[Anonymous] maxjeepI used winpooch under XP/SP2 fine
but now, after updating windows and having XP/SP3 :
impossible to use Winpooch and impossible to reinstall it...
It's a problem of driver (failed to install)
Does somebody use Winpooch under SP3 ?
(it it possible ?)

QUOTE:
winpooch = hooks into kernel mode drivers to monitor for suspicious activity
vista & xpsp3 = protects kernel mode activity, makes winpooch & other kernel security utilities obsolete, symantec profits down last year.

Do you realize that it's protecting the problems that winpooch only monitors? It's like you had a lookout and now you can fire him because you built a wall.

[Anonymous] Guestjawz101, please think before you write. Winpooch does (well, did) not protect you against programs that mess the kernel, but just lets you control which programs can call home or not. A bad program can call home now because there's no Winpooch to alert about it... [2008-09-03 08:52]

[Anonymous] GuestOops, I didn't realize jawz1101's quote (including the word "yesterday"...) was stolen from a forum and he's not a poster here himself. [2008-10-01 07:36]

[Anonymous] GmacriI installed Winpooch in my USB flash drive, but don't work with my portable ClamWin: Winpooch decides that ClamWin isn't installed, so I must uninstall it...
I think this would be patched in futures updates.

[Anonymous] MikezI have the same problem, Winpooch cannot work with portable (portableapps) version of ClamWin. Possible option to select location of AV ? [2008-10-20 19:28]

[Anonymous] GuestpOnTeS, how is it RESOLVED if all you did was linked to pre-kernel outdated version?! That's like saying RESOLVED for a Windows program by giving a link to a previous DOS version of the same program. [2008-11-08 11:46]

If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
