WhtDragon: For full blown testing of a website, this is the one to use. Apache, PHP 4 & 5 available, and MySQL... very, very nice! I use it to test Xoops and there's a prebuilt package for Joomla as well for USB devices. [2006-11-30 19:38]
Jon Williams: It should be noted that this software is similar to another project called XAMPP. [2007-07-21 15:22]
Meter: According to their respective web sites, one big difference between Uniform Server and XAMPP is that Uniform Server is set up by default to be safe for use as a production server whereas XAMPP assumes that you will be using it only for testing and will not be putting the server online. XAMPP gives you the ability to secure the setup, but it is not secure by default. [2007-07-22 03:27]
theboydanny: Perfect. I was looking for a portable test environment (for php/mysql mainly), but had some problems with XAMPP and other portable packages... But this, had it up and running immediately and it has just a great interface. I agree with Meter above, and besides the safety, this has just a much better and (user-)friendlier configuration panel than any package I tried before Uniform Server. Highly recommended. GothEeyore: Another difference is that Xampp is a much larger footprint than Uniserv. The full Universal server is just under 32 mb while Xampplite, their slimmed down version of Xampp, weighs in at 122 mb. Their full install is much bigger than that. [2007-10-12 12:36]
Alexander: This is absolutely the best WAMP package I used so far and is also suitable to serve as production server. Also, it is not installed, meaning, your can simply copy the folder containing all your stuff from one computer to another. GREAT! [2009-06-27 22:41]
Webfork: Regarding Wiki-on-a-Stick, its possible to setup XAMPP (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1069) portably and much easier:

Eddy: I prefer MoWeS (Modular Webserver System).

You can use MoWeS Mixer to download and choose from a whole list of application packages that will automatically install. Easy does it!

Next to this you can download and install external packages: http://www.mowesforum.chsoftware.net/topic/299/90-new-packages/ [2009-12-16 12:17]

All HTML tags will be removed from your comment. URLs (http, https, ftp) will be automatically detected and hyperlinked. I reserve the right to delete irrelevant, frivolous or offensive comments. For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
