TreeSize Free v2.7

Andrew Lee on 12 Feb 2013

TreeSize Free shows you instantly which files or folders are taking up the most space on your harddisk without using heavy system resources or reading the drive extensively.

Category:
System Requirements: WinXP / Vista / Win7
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? No. Creates an empty JAM Software\TreeSize Free folder in %AppData%. If the context menu integration is enabled/disabled, settings will be written to that folder.
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch TreeSizeFree.exe.

Optionally, to disable automatic update check on start-up:
  • Select "Help" and run "Check for Update...", wait for the popup message Uncheck the "Check for updates regularly" box
OR:

  1. Close the program
  2. Open GlobalOptions.xml in Notepad and look for the element <CheckForUpdatesAutomatically>True</CheckForUpdatesAutomatically>
  3. Change True to False and save
  4. Launch TreeSizeFree.exe
What's new?
  • The "Filter" dialog in the "Options" menu has been enhanced:
    - Besides include filters it is now also possible to use exclude filters. This can be useful to exclude certain directories or files permanently from TreeSize Free scans.
    - You can now define if matching should be done normally considering the wildcards * and ?, if an exact match should be performed, or if the pattern is treated as regular expression.
    - You can decide if the given pattern should be matched against the full path or just against the object name.
  • The right click menu now offers to remove a folder temporarily from TreeSize Free or to exclude it permanently from scans.
  • A few minor improvements and fixes have been incorporated.

I love treesize, it's in my top 20 list of must haves.

I love TreeSize too and use it all the time. However, with the 2.0 release seems to be much slower than my previous version (1.78). (i.e. takes about 5 times as long to scan a directory as compared to the old version.) I notice there is a new "Filter" option so maybe this is why.

Even more interesting... Scanning the same tree a second time (even after restarting the program) is MUCH quicker, so I wonder if something is being cached somewhere (i.e. in the registry perhaps?)

Terrific program but recommend the also portable Foldersize:

... as it will also analyze network drives.

It's not bad, but I find that WinDirStat is much more useful:

The graphical display makes it much easier to identify files and folders which could be removed or compressed to reduce the size of a package. For example, using WinDirStat and UPX, I've gotten my portable OpenOffice installation down to 106 megabytes.

Very fast application. However, since I have a lot of my files on a personal Buffalo Drive 600GB drive networked attached storage and this won't read network drives it's not much use to me.

I have SnoopFree running on my machine and after I started running this it constantly popped up telling me that some program was trying to read my screen - I assume it was this one. It was VERY persistent even after I told SnoopFree to block the screen read.

ZIP Ver.2.5.0.145.
Extract..run..switch context menu to "ON" and exit.
Scan a folder from Explorer..then turn "OFF" context menu.
Now look at your "user\AppData" folder..oh..seems not Portable.

After using this software I found a file "GlobalOptions.xml" in the user profile folder. It's not stealth.
