It sends off annoying jokes on the status bar. It once put a website address on the address bar without asking for my permission. I don't think it respects user's privacy.

GreenBrowser looks better.

Those annoying jokes can be turned off in the preferences. I never had it putting an address in the address bar by itself, and I've been using it for years.

Is this version portable?
Version: [2009-08-18]

Prefer this one over Greenbrowser, which has more features but feels cluttered.

What I would like to know is, why would I want this free tabbed browser instead of the free Mozilla Firefox tabbed browser whose security is well known???

Please, someone tell me why get this over another one thats also free??

jamvaru 2010-05-22 18:21

For the fun of it.
If you then zip the files it could be redistributed as a true portable download. YEs?

Emka 2011-02-01 18:14

To what extent is it not stealth?

homer 2011-02-02 13:41

looks good, but it lacks advanced security options

62MB installed is large compared to Opera portable at about 22MB and K-Meleon (full) at 22MB. FF portable on my system is at 96MB and Palemoon portable is 53MB. The only reason I even have FF at all is for compatibility on some sites.

freakazoid 2011-03-03 22:47

@TP109 - That's because Maxthon includes both IE and Webkit engines.

TP109 2011-03-04 01:03

OK. Is that a gimmik or is there a real advantage in having two engines?

freakazoid 2011-03-04 01:32

I have no idea, as I don't use it myself ;) I guess the advantage is on-the-fly engine switching without having to open another browser.

Maxthon has several advantages over other browsers, and while FF is best for using at home and elsewhere (especially due to its lack of support for activex and thousands of popular addons), I personally recommend Maxthon Portable for use in a corporate environment.

Maxthon has dual engines - Webkit (the same lightning-fast engine used by Google Chrome) and Trident (an IE-compatible mode). It has a lot of nice (and powerful) options out of the box (such as speed dial, shortcut URL keys, mouse gestures, magic fill, ad hunter, flash video saver, multi-search-engines, integrated notepad, RSS feed reader, etc). This means that for working with Intranet sites in your office, this is a perfect browser, since many of those sites work well only in IE (but may not in Firefox or other browsers), but we know IE doesn't have much of flexibility (thought recent versions have made it more appealing). For instance, many advanced features in Sharepoint seem to work well only in IE (and hence will work well in Maxthon), and we all know how big a market Sharepoint is gaining in the corporate world. Even more complex apps such SAP BusinessObjects (BO) work perfectly in Webkit mode in Maxthon (even though BO has issues with IE9).

So the dual-engine of Maxton is not a gimmick, it is a perfect solution to have speed (webkit) with site-compatibility (trident/IE). Maxthon Passport is an online feature to store your bookmarks and profile settings, so you can also access your favorite bookmarks even in a cybercafe or hotel while travelling, even if you don't want to carry Maxthon Portable on a USB stick.

The only things I miss are some of the advanced features (such as URL alias and mouse-gestures for magic fill) that were available in the older Maxthon 1.x, which made it one of the best tools for any office PC. Hopefully these features will added to Maxthon3 soon, I know its devs are working towards that.

I just downloaded Maxthon Portable from For reference, the uncompressed filesize is 98.6 MB.

carbonize 2012-04-19 15:52

@freakazoid I doubt it includes both engines as it will just use the IE engine that is on the Windows you are running it on.

@veekay And? Firefox has had the capability of using Dual engines for a long long time with it's IE Tab add on. From there on you can add whatever features you want.

YouTube downloader worked pretty well, although from the list of avaialble files it doesn't give you much information. Just that it's an FLV file. You then get to guess which one is which. Anyway, it downloaded without any difficulty. Prefer YoutubeDownloader HD, but nice to see this functionality integrated into a browser.

Here's a nice skin to replace that horribru default look

fullbug 2014-08-28 23:16

Let me know when they finally get Adblock plus, other then that I used to love that browser.....

PAFuser 2016-07-15 02:47 SC Magazine indicates Maxthon is sending information (history, etc) to China.
