Synopsis: KeePass is a password manager that helps you manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. You need only remember one single master password to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish).

Note: Since KeePass V2.x will require the .NET framework, I will only track changes to KeePass V1.x for the database.
Writes settings to: Application folder
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch KeePass.exe.
Stealth [?]: Yes
Unicode support: No
License: GPL
System Requirements: Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7
What's new: >>
  • Added option to use file transactions when writing databases (enabled by default; writing to a temporary file and replacing the actual file afterwards avoids data loss when KeePass is prevented from saving the database completely).
  • Added high DPI support.
  • The Ctrl+E shortcut key now jumps to the quick search box.
  • In the main entry list, backup entries are now rendered with green text color.
  • Menus are now rendered with gradient item backgrounds.
  • Added support for detecting KeePass 2.08 and higher KDBX database files.
  • Added {GOOGLECHROME} placeholder, which is replaced by the executable path of Google Chrome, if installed.
  • Added '--auto-type' command line option.
  • Added '--lock-all' and '--unlock-all' command line options to lock/unlock the workspaces of all other KeePass instances.
  • Added 'KeeConfigFileOverrideGlobal' and 'KeeConfigFileOverrideUser' configuration options to change the locations of the configuration files.
  • On Windows 7, KeePass now shows a 'locked' overlay icon on the taskbar button when the database is locked.
  • On Windows 7, when opening/saving a database, the taskbar button is now animated using an indeterminate progress bar.
  • Most broadcasted Windows messages do not wait for hanging applications anymore.
  • Improved multi-byte characters support in entry details view.
  • Improved toolbar updating after restoring from tray.
  • Improved naming of options to clarify their meaning.
  • Improved tray icon updating.
  • Improved behavior on KDBX error.
  • Upgraded installer.
  • Various performance improvements.
  • Various code optimizations.
  • Minor other improvements.

[Anonymous] Portable FanThis is the most intuitive program for keeping passwords and automatically entering them in for you at the touch of a hotkey. I've been using this thing for a year or so and it's great. There are some awesome new features (http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=418232&group_id=95013) if anyone is interested. [2006-09-27 19:30]

[Anonymous] [r4]Same as above - I've been using it since version 1.03 and still, it's just what I need! Password generator and expiration reminder are invaluable. [2006-09-28 02:51]

[Anonymous] crosserit's not crossover compatible, try password gorilla if you need flexibility. [2006-10-04 02:03]

[Anonymous] weblarg.comI've been using since 1.03, and it's hands down the best password management utility out there. And I've tried more than I care to remember! [2006-10-16 05:21]

[Anonymous] moebob22I have been using this now for about 2 years, best ever, [2006-10-24 21:02]

[Anonymous] sushiaddictGreat program - use it for all my passwords, plus personal stuff like credit cards, etc. [2007-01-19 15:05]

[Anonymous] John L. GaltBeen using this as my PWM after using another, shareware alternative before that - it has some issues here and there, especially in Vista, but I still love it and use it - I have found workarounds for the Vista issues, (mainly autotype) and continue to use it.

The new 2.0 Alpha seems to be a jump away from the support for cross-platforms, as it requires .NET, but KeePass was *always* touted as a Windows - based solution first and foremost - all others are maintained by third party developers. Let's hope that someone will find a way to port the 2.x series to a fully portable app as well, For I would hate to look for a new solution *yet again*.

[Anonymous] FootNotes on the developer's site at http://keepass.info/devstatus.html explain why "KeePass 1.x will continue to be supported indefinitely." [2007-04-01 00:18]

[Anonymous] fenixproductionsThere are few version of this software which no one knows:
KeePass - for Windows,
KeePassX - for GNU/Linux,
KeePass J2ME - for mobile devices.

Each mentioned app works with the same database file format. It is very simple to have KeePass everywhere you want. I am so geek that I keep 2 versions of it on my USB (win / linux) and one inside my mobile phone ;)

[Anonymous] SpongebobDo we really need the portableapps version?
There's this zip version on the website, it says:

"Download this ZIP package and unpack it to your favorite location (USB stick, ...). KeePass runs without any additional installation and won't store any settings outside the application directory."
 [2007-09-03 00:20]

[Anonymous] linuxampSpongebob, I just use the zip version + pstart. The portable apps version is designed to integrate with the portable apps suite, a launcher created by portableapps.com. Portableapps.com pushes their brand through their launcher and splash screens (marketing). If I can find a portable app without their splash screen I use it. [2007-09-03 14:31]

[Anonymous] BobartThe Portable Apps version puts it in their own folder structure and makes it easy to use with their app launcher. In addition, their launcher makes the last used directory setting truly portable.

linuxamp, almost every launcher from PortableApps.com allows you to use an INI file to disable the splash screen. For more details look in .\KeePassPortable\Other\KeePassPortableSource\Readme.txt

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
