VirtualDub Portable v1.10.4

Checker on 31 Oct 2013

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility. It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is great for video capture and transcoding via third-party video codecs. It can also read MPEG-1 video files by default but requires Plugins Pack to open more types of video (adds FLIC, FLV, Matroska, MPEG-2, AC-3 and WMV).

VirtualDub Portable is a portable wrapper for VirtualDub.
Alternatively, X-VirtualDub is also available.

Category:
System Requirements: WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8
Writes settings to: Application folder
Dependencies: Video codecs such as DivX, XVID, etc.
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Partial. VirtualDub supports unicode, but the PortableApps launcher doesn't.
License: GPL
How to extract:
  1. Download the self-extracting EXE and extract to a folder of your choice
  2. Optionally, extract the Plugins Pack to the same destination directory
  3. Launch VirtualDubPortable.exe
What's new?
  • ExtEnc: Added %(outputbasename) to insert output filename without extension.
  • ExtEnc: Editor UI now has a drop-down for tokens.
  • Filters: Expanded color space support in resize filter.
  • Preview: Return now also stops preview.
  • AVI: Added Copy button to AVI file information dialog.
  • AVI: Fixed bitsPerPixel value for NV12 output.
  • Capture: Improved error handling in screen capture module.
  • Capture: Fixed sporadic errors in DXGI 1.2 screen capture mode related to tracking pointer shape changes.
  • Capture: Spill drives can be adjusted on Windows XP.
  • Display: Fixed regression in D3D effects display mode.
  • ExtEnc: Fixed weird selection behavior when duplicating item.
  • Filters: Fixed script operation for Convert Format filter for the new modes.
  • Filters: Fixed crash when attempting to crop video in a format that isn't AVI-compatible.
  • Filters: Fixed cropping errors on alias format filter.
  • Filters: Fixed issues with interpolate filter in nearest mode.
  • GIF: Fixed shifted presentation timings when reading animated GIFs.
  • Render: The processing priority setting now correctly adjusts the priority of filter and compression worker threads too when multithreading is enabled.
  • TARGA: Fixed vertical inversion issues during read.
  • UI: Add Windows 8.1 per-monitor DPI awareness support.

virtualdub is a great piece of software. However, it require the codec to be already installed to work properly. Are there any way to include the codec in the virtualdub folder.

The software is portable, but the codec needed is not portable.

thom, if you want a video editor with built-in codecs, you can try mediacoder (GUI for mencoder) or avidemux.
I don't know if any of them is portable.

PJ 2007-06-04 17:53

mediacoder is not an editor.

An alternative is avidemux (www.avidemux.org), but currently it is hardcoded to write settings to the user profile folder.

Virtualdub's website claims that virtualdub is not an editor either...

it's a pre/post processor, primarily meant for cleaning up video.

I'd like to include it on my portable drive but I've no use for it if I can't find a way for it to utilize portable versions of the codecs that I prefer to encode to.

Mediacoder is some bloatware shit which may or may not encode your videos, VirtualDub allows you to make cuts, regardless of what the editor chooses to call the program.

Avidemux is not even remotely close to being as easy to use as VirtualDub, and that says alot.

"Avidemux is not even remotely close to being as easy to use as VirtualDub, and that says alot."
WOW! That's saying something because I think VirtualDub is one of the hardest to use video editing apps I've tried. If it were a paid app, I don't think it would have ever sold. Soooo many easier editors out there. They just aren't free.

I'm still waiting for a portable version of AviSynth to work with VirtualDub. You can do some pretty cool things with AviSynth, such as saving your movies in reverse so they play backwards.

If you're serious about video editing, you might as well save up all your paychecks for a year or just get your preferred editor of choice from a bit-torrent site. Because the options we currently have, isn't anything to grab about. Windows Movie Maker is the best second to none when it comes to "free" video editors. I have not found a replacement that doesn't "legally" cost a thing.

hey, PJ. First try and learn to use it, then judge it. MediaCoder is a great program, but not portable either, it requires firefox to run. I know there's a way to use it with portable firefox.
I dont know the portability of xmedia Recode (http://www.xmedia-recode.de/) but i do believe it uses internal codecs. It is avalable in english.

May seem a little odd, but for a very powerful (and portable) video editor, try Blender. It uses ffmpeg to open/save videos but it keeps it's own copy in a subdir, so no installation necessary.

I'm afraid, the link is VirtualDub Portable V1.9.7

VirtualDub was an essential program to have back in the day when there were very few progs for doing anything useful with video on your PC. Those days are gone and there are dozens of choices out there now, both free and pay.

abc 2012-05-24 19:22

@blissmana: can you tell us what these "dozens of choices" you have, preferably the free ones.

V1.9.11

Having issues getting VDPortable to read MP4s encoded with h.264. Installed the plugins pack yet still no dice. Nothing appears under Options>Plugins, either, videos show a missing codec image or simply don't open.

Since that didn't work I'm currently trying to get FFDShow to recognize VDPortable, after installing it's plugin to the 64-bit plugin folder. Any tips on how to get them playing well together would be great.

Specular: I'd reach out to the devs on that one
