i still prefer Kliu's Notepad2, also supports ascii plus tons of other features while remaining light.

The v4.6 installer has an "install to USB stick" option.
To display ASCII art, install the GetDiz fonts.
DIZzy (8 kb) is nice for displaying .diz and .nfo files.
