Fluffy: configuration is limited. You can't shrink the super-extra- large icons. Also, can't remove the icons you don't want to use (i.e. Favorites, Recent). I do like the fact that you can attach your 'Quick Launch' folder to the program, refresh the list, and you have your links all together in one place. In theory, the author is on the right track. risk: A couple of more issues. If the Windows taskbar is either on the right or left sides of the screen as opposed to the bottom or top, the menu does not launch.
Also, when you click in folders in your apps, to get to applications, I did not see how you can go upwords to parent folders.
I too like this app and if it worked I would prefer it to PStart because the app menus are dynamic instead of having to maintain them manually. [2007-10-23 17:15]
Hunter (Author): There is a way to go up to the parent folder. You have to right click on an item then click "Go back to Programs". I know this is not very intuitive but I'm rewriting the code so I can add an "Up One Folder" icon at the top. This will be available in future versions.
If I had more people to make skins, we could make more skins that had smaller buttons. You can also leave buttons out (Favorites, Recent, etc.) by creating a specific skin. If anyone would like to help me make skins, contact me on sciactive.com.
Keep in mind, this is a Beta, so lots of improvements and new features are in store!
Hope you all enjoy. :) [2007-10-24 14:23]
xlepws: nice program!
one thing essential is a button or way to stop the program's searching..when it's searching (say you just write 'a'), you can't stop it and push other prog buttons either. [2007-11-05 03:49]
xlepws: oh, as Fluffy already said, I add my vote for the possibility of removing the icons (favorites, recents) you don't use [2007-11-05 03:50]
Sepp: Is there a posibility to distribute it in the zip file without the instalator? I downloaded the portable version and tried to install it, but it requires administrator rights unfortunately. I would very like to try it, becouse the idea is great.
I translatd ASuite into slovak language, so I can translate this launcher too. [2007-12-06 01:56]
Hunter (Author): Thanks for the suggestion Sepp. Open Menu+ Portable is now available on SciActive.com in Zip format. Can you please contact me using the Contact page on SciActive.com about helping me translate it into Slovak. Any help is greatly appreciated. [2007-12-06 10:36]
Loner: I loaded this program, it found its resting place on my right side of screen. No instructions, no icons, no programs to click on. I cant understand how this works without some help file or user preference. For now, its just blank. I did a search of files I have, and no result. What am I missing here?? [2008-01-06 08:36]
Hunter (Author): It sounds like it wasn't installed correctly. Can you contact me on the Contact page on SciActive.com with more information and I'll see if I can help. [2008-01-09 23:15]
Hunter (Author): I just finished writing the help file. After you install you will be given an option to load the help file. You can also launch it by going to "Open Menu+ Settings" under the Computer View and click the "Help" button near the bottom. [2008-01-17 08:27]
Wolfghost: Hmmmf.........yes like Loner said, but I have icons with no respons, all I get is a bunch with icons with txt "Language Not Configured Correctly" and nothing working, not even exit !!! :(( [2008-01-21 10:12]
Hunter (Author): That can happen if the correct path is not selected in the updater. Be sure to select the correct path in the updater when an update is available.
In the portable version it's usually something like "E:\OpenMenu+" (Note that there is no space in the path) [2008-01-23 16:32]
Wolfghost: I found the problem, I'v get a corrupt file with first downloading !!
It's work fine now ;))
Thanks Hunter ;) [2008-01-26 06:10]
Hunter (Author): With version 1.5.5 you can now shrink the super extra large icons. And if you use a small skin, this allows for a very small interface altogether, which is better for a portable app. [2008-02-06 11:01]
Bad_@ss: Big Button...
Waste of space and looks kiddie!!
Options are limited, try PStart! [2008-02-14 22:44]
Hunter (Author): Thanks Bad_@ss. By the way, if you want the buttons to be small, try the small skins. :P
Did you look at the settings?
I wonder if Bad_@ss is a PStart developer... [2008-02-17 15:08]
Kermode: Bad_@ss don't tell us your opinion of the software - we will make up our own opinion. [2008-03-28 20:07]
Kermode: Ok tried it: Opens a config screen which isn't a real window, meaning it is hard to find again if you end up with another window over it - but more importantly it is so tall it doesn't really fit on my screen and makes it hard to find the button to click. "replace start menu" is ticked but grayed out? And the program keeps hitting the firewall when it starts - not something i like. [2008-03-28 20:39]
Hunter (Author): What would you all say to an XML based interface where you can completely customize every item/set of items in Open Menu+ and what it does? I've been thinking that this is what I will do for version 2.0 or 2.5. [2008-04-07 16:43]
bobofet: i wish that when i press the start button i could start typeing the name of the program immediately instead oof clicking in the search box then typeing. less mouse = good :P
oh and its a little slow in searching..takes is a good 5 seconds and with really large start menus it lists all the folders but then the menu shrinks and grows indefinetely...i think it keeps refreshing or something...
v1.5.6 [2008-04-18 20:01]
Hunter (Author): You should be able to hit the start button and start typing. If you scroll the mouse over any of the view buttons at the bottom however, it will give focus to the listview. The Windows COM environment is terrible at handling active windows and focus. If you have a problem with focus, it's most likely caused by this. I use several techniques in Open Menu+ to handle focus. For the search speed, look in the Open Menu+ documentation for instructions on how to speed it up. [2008-05-13 10:32]
a: respect to the author. looks like an interesting project, it's just a little too crash happy. i don't know if it's because i ran i from sandboxie, or not. i wish the changes/settings were incremented on the fly, instead of restarting itself, (thats about the time it crashed) and thats one of my major complaints, besides the size, surely it can be reduced to less than 5 megs? [2008-06-04 14:27]
thunder7: I do not even get a menu. I get a very small grayed out area of my screen. I have to kill with task manager.
Great idea, but needs A lot of work!. [2008-06-30 18:13]
Initrd.gz: Trying to open, but I get an error:
Language not configured correctly
The instructions on the website says to modify a settings.ini file, but it does not exist. [2009-02-12 14:47]
my.name: once the icon in the tray is clicked, the menu is there all the time instead of fading away.
is there any option to automatically hide it after a number of seconds? [2009-06-03 10:16]
