[Anonymous] NuLLNever used this, but 58 Mb compared to 16 Mb VLC portable uses. to me the choose seems obvious. VLC is Also codecless and comes with its own GUI [2007-09-21 23:36]

[Anonymous] NuLL^http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable
Forgot the link for those who want to check it out.

[Anonymous] szegaYou loose. Mplayer has it's own skinnable gui, too.
It's only 6,3MB.
 [2007-09-22 12:48]

[Anonymous] LocalLoose?
I never did understand why people say that

Anyway, Mplayer can be small but not if you have all of the codecs installed, 58 MB is approx for the full version that will play almost anything.

VLC is my player of choice but it doesn't play all of the formats that mplayer does.
I find it useful for me but if you want to play all Quicktime files and any real files mplayer is a good bet.

Btw I've not tried this frontend because I already have about three mplayers, I can only assume that this will be as good as any other and entirely down to your own taste

[Anonymous] testbetasoftOMG,
Stop talking bullshit and take a look at the software. This is the best mplayer frontend with the most advanced and configurable skin ever created. I am using it since half year and i have to tell you that is the best. I am a person that hates installing codec packs and even a single codecs so my system is using GOM Player as default player and VLC and sMplayer as backups. (Optional you can install the Alternatives like Quicktime lite and Real lite if you want and you are good to go.)

[Anonymous] Local@testbetasoft.

What's the problem? Can you not make an intelligent comment without swearing?

Fine you have an opinion and people would like to hear it but do you really think people will take you seriously when you start a comment that way?
 [2007-09-23 15:30]

[Anonymous] kooKyGuYUse what you like, but if you haven't tried this one then your opinion means very little. I am not sure why anyone would not use it just because of the size. If 58 MB (by the way, Mb = megabit not megabyte)is to much for their hard drive to hold, they should upgrade it to modern standards. It is obvious for me to judge the program based on how well it performs instead of the tiny difference in size from vlc. I have been trying this out and so far I like it a lot. :) [2007-09-23 18:04]

[Anonymous] GawranActually, size difference is not that big, I got my SMPlayer down to 24MB with a few tricks:
1. download UPX tool from upx.sourceforge.net
2. compress all .exe and .dll files, and *all* files in mplayer\codecs\ subdir (except Readme.txt) with "upx --best".
3. delete whole "translations" dir (even _eng files)
4. check out all skins, and delete ones you don't like
5. delete all .txt files you don't need (actually, this could be licence violation, so it's better to leave them)

My VLC is 10MB (same procedure), and it is a great piece of software, but almost everything about MPlayer is better than VLC (e.g. it loads 5 times faster than VLC).

SMPlayer has really great GUI, but if you are more of a minimalistic type, try MPUI (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=431), which is also MPlayer GUI, and with the same codec pack takes just 16-17 MB.

OFF-topic: about testbetasoft, I thought this little forum has a moderator. I could understand someone getting angry and swearing in a political or religious discussion, but portable apps? Man, get a life!

[Anonymous] szegaHey man, I'm just kidding. I forget this little sign: :), or this ;).
If you like VLC, use it! Your decision.
I prefer mplayer. (One reason is, this program is made by Hungarian programmers, and I'm Hungarian, too.)
Size matters, becasue I made a program pack to my pendrive, and I use it when I meet a "naked" PC.
 [2007-09-24 07:44]

[Anonymous] Gawran@szega
Yes, size does matter, but your 6,3MB MPlayer is very limited in what files it can decode. If you want one opens-everything player, then you have to add codecs (about 22MB, if I remember correctly, one can upx it down to 12MB). Otherwise, sooner or after you will run into a vid that can not be decoded, and then you'll be "naked" too :)

Unfortunatelly, I can't put my trust in any of them, so I have MPlayer, K-Mplayer, VLC and MediaPlayerClassic all on my stick, which is a bit too much (45MB of video players on a 512MB drive), but if I had to choose, I would too go for MPlayer.

If someone in Croatia made a video player (even a crappy one), I would probably switch to that one :)
 [2007-09-24 09:26]

[Anonymous] Daki like this SMplayer a lot, what i like most is slowmo and screenshots, i have been using it for a month and i would like to keep using but there is one glaring and major annoyance i find thats nagging me to stick with Media Player Classic. The volume settings are not persistent!!!!grrr!! Many times i will click on a small clip and SMplayer opens with the volume at %100 even though i had the volume set at %20 last time i used it. this usually gets me jumping out of my seat in a state of adrenalin feuled panic not to mention half deaf, for the rest of the day.

Similarly if you load a clip thats already in history the thing opens and for like a split second its really load and then corrects itself resetting the volume to the previous state.

im having a hard time getting over it and 2 updates later, still the same behavior. it doesnt seem like the devs are too sure of how they want the layout either, it would be nice if some more time was spent on this part of the app as well.
 [2007-09-29 23:11]

[Anonymous] jrolzI start used frm ver0.5.61, all work nice for me
but when I update to the new version 0.5.62
there and error message come out, mention something
cannot be read from the file.
I compare back the latest with previous and manage to
get back the smplayers by copy the Qt**.dll from the 0.5.61ver into the latest ver0.5.62 then become OK back
I suppose the problem is within the Qt**.dll file, Dont know how to fix its, for me it the best Mplayer that I can bring with my thumbdrive. If the developer read this
can U guyz improve the audio side by include the audio equalizer for audio ouput fine tunning.
well great product to have it
One more thing the old version is more less memory then latest but U cannot feel the diffrent - for me
 [2007-12-14 01:34]

[Anonymous] RVMHi, I'm the developer of SMPlayer.

The problem implementing an audio equalizer is that mplayer doesn't provide slave commands for that, so I'm afraid it can't be done.

About the problem with the volume at 100% on startup, it seems to be a problem of mplayer on Windows (that doesn't happen on Linux). But maybe I will able to fix this in the next release.
 [2007-12-27 17:40]

[Anonymous] AmiNimADon't judge about players. Kmplayer in kmplayer.com is the best and the most proffesional player that I've seen. It's an open source portable player and can play anything you want. the complete size after installing is about 37.MB . By coping some codecs and plugins to its folder it comes about 47.MB. [2008-02-08 00:09]

[Anonymous] SalOne more thing about smplayer portability. This affects smplayer users who use SSA/ASS library Option. If you choose this option, smplayer will create a folder named "fontconfig" in "documents and settings\your user name". so you might want to go ahead and delete that folder if you don't want to leave any files behind. [2008-03-13 18:07]

[Anonymous] DevNullIt's portable, but no longer stealth. Since v0.5.62 it creates registry entries in the following locations

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MPlayerFileVideo
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\MPlayerFileVideo

I think these entries are for enqueuing files using Windows' context menu. So far I have not found a way to disable them.
 [2008-04-22 05:00]

[Anonymous] J44xmThanks for the notice. I'm using a batch file to open SMPlayer and then remove those entries after closing it. [2008-04-22 06:37]

[Anonymous] IanIf "Pass short filenames" is enabled, Smplayer couldn't autoload subtitle correctly. So, the option to "load all subs in the directory" needs to be used for smplayer to autoload sub. [2008-07-09 00:54]

[Anonymous] rvmNow there's a portable version of smplayer, which among other things, doesn't write anything in the registry. More info:

 [2008-07-19 01:36]

[Anonymous] ai could upx compress this thing but i get a program error 00005, and then nothing. rulesplayer was upx compressed and runs without problems. was looking forward to comparing. [2008-08-10 19:57]

[Anonymous] pakmenuvery big difference between VLC and SMplayer:

SMplayer can watch movies in 10% step increase of speeds, while keeping audio pitch equal (with ac3 or mp3 or other frequancy based codecs, frequencies remain same but are player shorter intervals, making movie faster without increasing pitch)

With VLC the smallest step of increased (or decreased) speed is either 200% or 50% and the sound does not work.

I like at boring documentaries to run through it at 120-130% speed, SMplayer is great at that, while being able to comprehend all that is said and just save time on the boring parts, at high speed action or dialogue sometimes /i also use 70-90% speed setting.

the key [ decreases speed 10% and ] increases 10%
backspace sets it back to 100%
 [2008-08-19 21:29]

[Anonymous] porkbuttLooks like a nice program but it has a few flakey issues. Start a movie and then move to a point 1/3 from the end using the seek bar. It jumps all over the place. This is a program killer unless you only watch DVDs from beginning to end without interruption.

Also, if you have subtitles enabled, you’ll need to disable and then re-enable subtitles when you start SMPlayer. This option is ignored each time you restart SMPlayer.

[Anonymous] MehtuusThey have a preconfigured Portable version available now:
http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/downloads.php?tr_lang=en
The package also includes the icon themes, translations and a MPlayer build.
_________________________________________________________

SMPlayer Portable Edition is a special version of SMPlayer (for Windows)
which tries to not write anything outside from the directory where it is
installed, so it can be used from external devices like pendrives.

You can get a package from here:
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=185512&package_id=284416

To install it, just uncompress it wherever you want. To run it just
double click on smplayer.exe.

The package includes:

* SMPlayer (portable version)
* A MPlayer build
* Translations and icon themes

What are the differences with the normal SMPlayer?

* By default it will save the ini files in the smplayer's folder.
* It won't try to create the smplayer home directory or the screenshot
directory (C:\Documents and Settings\User\.smplayer\...)
* It won't write anything in the Windows registry (for that reason the
file associations are not available in this version)
* The screenshot option is disabled by default.

How to know if it's really the portable version?

Go to Help -> About SMPlayer, it should say something like this:
"Version: 0.6.5.1 (Portable Edition)"

[Anonymous] chrisSMPlayer is a very cool media lpayer, it plays alot of the media files my other applications wont play, I tend use the portable version from the Lupo PenSuite which is only a 20mb download. [2008-12-17 05:09]

[Anonymous] Ziggyhttp://kovensky.project357.com/#downloads
is the link for an mplayer version without gui that plays rmvb, rm, ram, avi, xvid, divx, mov, mpg, mkv,mp4, mp3 etc. you just need to download.to have a gui just download:
http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/mplayer_portable and then replace themplayer.exe from the portable verison with the one from http://kovensky.project357.com/#downloads adn there you go no codecsd and less than 7MB player that plays all.

[Anonymous] who cares about my name?I think that smplayer would do great, if it worked on my computer. But i believe it's better than vlc because vlc doesn't work proper with collors. ( something that has to be red looks blue.) [2009-05-14 12:10]

[Anonymous] george.romaniato make a diference betwen smplayer and bsplayer or VLC do this: download a movie(camera capture) and open it in bsplayer or VLC and smplayer in the same time...you will see the diference...image quality in smplayer is better... [2009-05-23 11:51]

[Anonymous] ZaysThe original portable version of SMPlayer is not portable: it writes settings in Windows registry changing the color of GUI (Trolltech) and many absolute paths (recent files, playlist, icons for TV and Radio, etc..) are not normalized moving the program. I'm testing the portable version powered by winPenPack http://www.winpenpack.com/main/download.php?view.1245 and it works well. [2009-08-08 23:33]

[Anonymous] PJIf you get the portable version, yes then its portable. If you enter an absolute path to something, the program is SUPPOSED to remember the path, not try and change it based on some guesses.
The portable version writes nothing in the registry.
 [2009-08-10 03:22]

[Anonymous] DevNullThe current portable version of SMPlayer (SMPlayer v0.6.9) is portable except for writing to the registry the key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Trolltech] and several keys underneath it.

This can be fixed by removing the folder "imageformats" and the contained file "qjpeg4.dll". According to this web page (http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-121229-p-3.html), qjpeg4.dll allows smplayer to read/write jpeg files (currently only used for the video preview option) and that it should work without it, using png files instead.

Though I have no idea how to invoke the video preview option to test it, I was able to verify that SMPlayer does work fine without folder "imageformats" and its contents, and is "stealth" while doing so.

According to http://portableapps.com/node/18796, qjpeg4.dll was removed from offical SMPlayer package. I can verify that it was not present in SMPlayer Portable v0.6.8. Unsure why it reappeared in v0.6.9
