great tool for creating icons!

i tried a commercial solution called axialis iconshop and that had a crappy UI... IcoFX is the best icon editor i have found!

portable and free! can't get any better!

I agree with all of the above but in addition I have to say it's also FUN.

It's so simple and easy to use, it's like a tiny windows paint
I've been using it every day and I don't even use icons

Absolutely brilliant

It doesn't respect windows settings for fonts and hardcodes a tiny unreadable font size.

Fun program, lots of options and tools. It can both extract and create icon resources, it supports alpha-transparency, Vista 64-bit icons and you can export to a different image format, like gif or png. This, together with the live preview makes it a nice editor for general purpose pixel-art, and not just ico-files. Image-size is limited to 256x256, though.
Yep, this one is going into the toolbox.

For me the links don't work unless you remove the ".xhost" part. So the link to the download is http://icofx.ro/files/icofxpe.zip

Can this produce multiple icon sizes from a single image like Axialis IconWorkshop? Because for me, that's a real time-saving feature.

This program has a bug where I can't choose certain colors like 255-153-0, so unfortunately I can't use it. It also takes up 17MB of memory on my laptop, which is too much for an icon editor IMHO.

This app is excellent! I have tried "Axialis IconWorkshop" but "IcoFX" works even better for me!

The new v2.0 is payware. The download link is now broken.

ChipsNHotSauce 2011-09-06 21:12

Disappointing to find out this has gone shareware. In this case it seems to be competing with IconWorkShop, hence the similar prices. I'll stick with the last free version v1.6.4.

I switched to Greenfish Icon Editor Pro ( http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1420 ).

Midas 2012-03-08 18:26

As noted, recent versions of IcoFX are shareware; also the current download link seems to be broken -- the free version can still be found at FileHippo: http://www.filehippo.com/download_icofx/6890/

Wolfghost 2012-03-08 23:41

@Midas Fixed

rogerthedodger 2012-11-09 22:03

TPFC download link is broken, and the reference above to filehippo dl has only the installer version.

lautrepay 2012-11-10 01:04

@rogerthedodger: you can download the PortableApps.com package. Extract or install it, the contents of the APP folder is all you need, delete the rest. After the first launching of IcoFX.exe the configuration files will be created

small fonts (on the app itself) = @ Kermode
Found a solution !
Dowmoad 12noon Dispay Changer (free -> google): very nice prgram, helps me a lot with old programs on my new large screen !
Install. Go to folder where installed, make a shortcut from the cd.exe folder.
Rightclick on shortcut, open properties
Richtclick IcoFX.exe, open properties, highlight target command line, copy (Ctrl + c)
Go to THE END of the same line (target) in the IconFX properties, paste (Ctrl + v); leave a space between both (there are quotation marks at the beinning and at the end of both)
Go to the space and type (without quotation marks, but leaving again a space before, in between and at the end) "-width=1152 -height=864" (or any other screen size COMPATIBLE with your screen, e.g. 1600x 900 1027x768, etc; see help of dc to find out which screen sizes are compatible).
Close properties of both.
Change the name and icon of dc.exe to IcoFX.
That's it !
(When you close IcoFX, the screen will automatically return to its initial size, so the change onlw affcts this program !)

The busy XP screenshot doesn't do the app justice. Worthwhile app for icon creation and extraction. Main limitation of this version is the lack of 512px+ size support, which OSX and now Windows 10 support.
