Great Program! Use it for all sorts of stuff for my website.

Hint: You can download the French version zip file and extract it to the folder of your choice. Then, separately download the English (or any other) language file and extract it to the application directory. This will avoid the install/uninstall process.

very easy to use, and powerful/quick execute also! 5 star recommand! I can leave photoshop for some case! cheers.

This is a very handy editor, especially when combined with some of the plugins. I used the French zip + language file install method and it seems to work fine.

Great for it's size.
It would be nice to have layers included but for free it's great.

The only bugbear I found with it is that I cannot see the brush size on the picture, that makes things VERY difficult when you need precision.

On the whole it makes me miss my photoshop.
If you have the the space I'd recommend GIMP but this comes a good second

MrHope 2007-10-14 12:13

This program has some nice selection, color, and filter/blur effect possibilities. Overall, a very useful tool for quick edits.

Some additional plugins didn't work when loaded, but perhaps
that was a problem with an earlier version of the program.

It's GREAT 2007-12-31 06:13

Been using this program for years. It totally ROCKS ! !

Webfork 2008-01-19 23:24

Somewhere between Windows paint program and the free GIMP editor, this program lets you do the basics and then take them a step further. Great for doing quick, simple web graphics or photo touch ups. Additionally, very kind to system resources for older computers, using only 4 megs of RAM.

I've been using this for a while, and love it. So much so that I upgraded to the "studio" version, PhotoFiltre-Studio, which adds layers. Excellent app!

Webfork 2008-07-06 18:07

A great replacement for the very useful Microsoft Office 2000 Graphics Editor. Since new versions of office don't include this great software, PhotoFiltre works well in its place.

Flavine 2008-10-13 17:44

I downloaded the installer and installed on my PC. Then I copied the installed folder and tried to follow the instructions on "How to extract". I couldn't find any of the files or folders mentioned. How do I make this portable?

Name 2008-11-02 09:01

Flavine, download universal extractor and use that to extract the installer file. Then read the rest of "How to extract".

6.4.0 writes settings to "C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\PhotoFiltre\PhotoFiltre.ini"

CD 2009-12-20 19:41

Confirmed. 6.4.0 writes to AppData.

Lupo73 2009-12-21 19:59

I have contacted the author to request the portable support.. I hope in this improvement..

Mark 2010-08-17 08:33

@Webfork -- Search for "microphotoed.exe" and you are sure to find the good old Microsoft Photo/Image Editor.

Shodan 2010-11-27 12:35

Been using PhotoFiltre for years now and have yet to find something I cannot do with it. It absolutely rocks and is both portable and free on top of that. Ten stars and a Thank You to the author !

PhotoFiltre Studio news describes v6.5.3 of PhotoFiltre (freeware version) as a last update of version 6 "for users ... allergic to layers". A new freeware version 7 is available for download at http://www.photofiltre-studio.com/pf7-en.htm.

The site advises that "PhotoFiltre 7 is developed with the core PhotoFiltre Studio to support layers and to improve the filters. There are less functions compared to PhotoFiltre Studio X which remains the most advanced version! PhotFiltre 7 is freeware for private uses (including non-profit organizations)."

@Foot
Thanks. V7.0.0 seems to be portable and stealth.

Emka 2012-01-07 21:02

@mrpink: Strange, I do not get that on Win7x64...

V6.5.3

Ennovy 2012-01-07 21:37

I also don't get that on Windows 7 32 bit

V6.5.3

mrpink 2012-01-07 21:46

Guys, i'm talking about Photofiltre7 (on XP)

V6.5.3

Emka 2012-01-07 21:59

I was talking about 6.5.3 and 7.

V6.5.3

Emka 2012-01-10 17:48

Does anyone else get the registry entries mrpink mentioned? Or should we update the entry to v7 (maybe hinting at v6.5.3). BTW, PAc has released a paf version of v7.

V6.5.3

dany 2012-01-10 18:02

@Emka: Confirmed, I tested with v7 on Win7 64-bit and I also get those registry entries.
A shame really, because it's one of my favorite editors and finally got layer support.

V6.5.3

mrpink 2012-01-10 19:39

I still get these entries even with the PortableApps version

V6.5.3

lautrepay 2012-01-10 20:10

@Emka: On Vista 64, a lot of registry entries were created under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT after first running of v.7.

V6.5.3

Foot 2012-01-11 06:17

@Emka: I first ran PhotoFiltre 7 through RegFromApp which showed no Registry activity at all (in Win 7 Professional, 32 bit). When I launched it through a Magic Formation shortcut, my security software queried several Registry changes. I accepted these because stealth operation is not essential for me. I recall that some of the changes were similar to those mentioned by mrpink. During that run, I set my application preferences through the Preferences dialog.
After mrpink's posting, I checked for the listed Registry entries and found none of them. I checked again after your posting on 2012-01-10 and found none, even with PhotoFiltre 7 running. Searching the Registry for "photofiltre" reveals some mentions through security applications but none of the entries listed by mrpink.

V6.5.3

dany 2012-01-11 07:27

@Foot: Strange. On my end the registry entries remained, whether PhotoFiltre was running or not.
Whereas on your end they're either not created or somehow removed.
So I removed all PhotoFiltre related entries from my registry and fired up PhotoFiltre7 from within RegFromApp. Same story, the keys mentioned by mrpink are added again.
Strange, right?

V6.5.3

Foot 2012-01-11 09:50

@Dany: I've just run a new copy of the English zip portable version from my Desktop, using the default .ini file. RegFromApp reported nothing and double clicking the .exe directly produced no Registry alerts. Regedit showed none of the listed entries, with or without PhotoFiltre 7 running (in Windows 7, 32 bit, fully patched).

V6.5.3

guinness 2012-01-11 11:03

I ran on Windows XP SP3 with Admin rights and it created the registry above. If you're running as a limited user it doesn't seem to be a problem.

V6.5.3

SYSTEM 2012-01-11 11:08

I have NOT tested PhotoFiltre 7 myself, but I decided to mention this anyway...
Writing to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT requires administrator rights.

V6.5.3

I am Baas 2012-01-11 11:44

Yes, I tested it as a limited user... no registry entries.

V6.5.3

lautrepay 2012-01-11 13:30

My test was WITH administrator rights.
So, is there a way to run an application without admin rights in an account with privileges?

V6.5.3

dany 2012-01-11 18:45

Tested it too as admin, so apparently that's the reason.
Still pretty weird behavior imho. Why write those keys if you don't need them as a limited user?

V6.5.3

dany 2012-01-16 14:51

A little follow-up:
Running with restricted privileges using runas:
runas /trustlevel:0x20000 PhotoFiltre7.exe
Your mileage may vary. Try runas /showtrustlevels to find out what levels are available and choose Limited or Basic User. It started PhotoFiltre without Admin rights on my box.
Another more robust option using Sysinternal's PsExec:
psexec -l PhotoFiltre7.exe

About PhotoFiltre7 itself: Still has it's quirky way of doing some things, but the layers are a great and very appreciated addition! Imho it's the cream on the cake and it's by far one of the tastiest freeware cakes eh graphic editors out there.

V6.5.3

dany 2012-01-16 15:13

Woops I forgot:
1. In both cases, the registry entries mentioned by mrpink are not created.
2. PsExec severely cripples the save option (haven't tested anything else), with runas all works fine.

V6.5.3

Emka 2012-07-07 10:24

PortableApps has PhotoFiltre v7.

V6.5.3

Napiophelios 2012-12-14 02:34

wow I must say the addition of the file navigator / mask preview filmstrip pane is pretty cool
I dont like how I cant make it go away but its definately useful :)

Photofiltre continues to be one of favorite and most often used applications

v7.1.0

Foot 2012-12-16 05:49

@ Napiophelios: It seems the file navigator pane can be toggled from the "Image explorer" item on the Tools menu.
