Synopsis: API Guard is an "application firewall" that supervises actions made by applications on files, registry and processes. It comes in handy when you need to run untrusted programs and you want to restrict when the executable can do (eg. write to the registry, delete files etc.)
Writes settings to: Application folder
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch the program by double-clicking on ApiGuard.exe.
License: Freeware/Open Source
System Requirements: Win2K / WinXP

[Anonymous] mji've been looking for something like this for a long time. very pleased with this one. seems to work as advertised. [2007-02-01 13:53]

[Anonymous] nt_supportUnfortunately, it doesn't work for me and I really would like this app. I follow the readme and I get:
"Error: Spy_dll.DLL doesn't exists in current directory!"

Double click on RunWithDLL.exe, then it works fine.
Had the same problem.

[Anonymous] HolaSeems just the app I needed too but Mcafee is blocking the RunwithDLL.exe.
WTF is new malware.J Anyway?

[Anonymous] LocalNew malware.j seems to be anything that mcafee doesn't like the look of.
It's picked up with their heuristic scanners.
So far I have about 35 of these "possible viruses" and everything is running just how I want it on my pc.

I think mcafee targets any program that might be in competition but free.
Actually I heard somewhere that it basically means it's packed with UPX.

[Anonymous] bellgaminIt's a good idea. System Safety Monitor (SSM) does the same thing & MUCH more. However, SSM is not free. [2007-10-20 12:31]

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
