Synopsis: CloneSpy can help you free up hard drive space by detecting and removing duplicate files with exactly the same contents regardless of their name, date, time, or location. Also, CloneSpy is able to find files that are not exactly identical, but have the same file name. This can be an issue for example if you have different versions of a file and you want to find and remove the older versions. CloneSpy is able to find zero-byte files.

[Anonymous] raphaelOne app I wouldn't want to use. Duplicate finders (every filemanager has a file search function) enough and the latter function is bound to send you to disaster. Part of being a professional is knowing where you can burn your fingers :-) [2006-12-08 03:41]

[Anonymous] adamhneat tool. Since my mom and sister both have digital cameras, they are constantly moving pictures to and from the hard drive and their SD Cards...so yea, this should help sort out those duplicate pictures....hehehe. [2006-12-08 06:10]

[Anonymous] raphaelJust what I ment, wait till both of them save different pictures as 'special.jpg'. If your mother doesn't wipe your ass, your sis will scratch your eyes out :-) [2006-12-08 11:45]

[Anonymous] FredDI've been using it for the last 2 years, it is an incredibly powerful, time and disk space saving app.
So many options, so many capabilities, packed in a simple GUI.
Just like any powerful tool, be sure to check twice before deleting.

[Anonymous] RoninThis is PERFECT for finding duplicate files IF your careful.. I especially like using it for finding duplicate photos. Wish it had a thumbnail view though that would make positively perfect! [2006-12-09 06:24]

[Anonymous] markusone of the best tools. If only there would be more of them.
Thanks to the programmer.
One of my best tools.

[Anonymous] LocalI love this tool. It is now one of my essential apps that goes everywhere with me.

It doesn't delete files based on their name (on the original settings) but on their content.

There is also a preview of what the files are when using manual delete.
But I've been using this for ages and it hasn't made a mistake yet.
If you're especially concerned you could always use the "export duplicate list" feature.
It still saves you a lot of time, and being a "professional" that is very important to me

[Anonymous] NieferUsing it for years. Just a perfect tool, used it a lot against fonts nightmare. [2008-01-06 22:59]

[Anonymous] ArnieDoes Clonespy work in Vista? [2008-06-24 20:41]

[Anonymous] fsrGood question, I extracted the contents and it worked, but the "add folder" function is causing my Vista 32-bit to freeze for 10 seconds and than it goes back to normal, working Ok. In home page they say it wasn't tested in a Vista platform, and they appreciate users input. I just give them my feedback. But my first impression was also very positive. [2008-09-15 13:26]

[Anonymous] John KarmaTried the program on a 120gig usb disk filled to about a 100.
The program is SLOOOOOOOWWWWWW it took more than 30 minutes with no idea how long to go, and then my patience was gone and pressed the x and removed the program.
Another thing is I had to confirm every time something was found which stops the process, it would be nice if a list is produced (a textfile is but then I have to do things by hand after that). Automatic deletion is possible just not my thing and if you're not an idiot it probably isn't for you either.

Before trying clonespy I used Doublekiller which takes a couple of minutes, lets me know something about the progress and has more intuitive options.

looking at the screenshots of the other programs it seems to me they do the same as Doublekiller or less, never more.

Strange fact that ranked by popularity the crappy programs come first, I will stick to Doublekiller (unless something far superiour comes along)

so if:

1) if have a lot of files and or big files (who doesn't now a days)
2) your time is precious to you, or you hate waiting.

DO NOT use Clonespy, I recommend doublekiller.

regards John

CloneSpy generates signatures for every file it checks - hence a little more time and effort is involved in running the scan. I believe you can disable the signature checking and speed things up, but you do so at your own peril.

Same for the prompt on each file deletion. CloneSpy has several options for deletion - manual, defer to a batch file, or automatic. And you can choose to auto delete or just move to a folder for review before deletion.

As a digital packrat, I rather like this app to help me weed through my multiple downloads of various apps.

Like any powerful tool, use your brain and a good amount of caution before you go deleting things.

[Anonymous] tempelengI really, really prefer the simpler interface of this program compared to the others listed on this site. It's also quite fast when searching the duplicates but the popup style of handling any duplicates it finds is kinda annoying. [2008-12-02 04:40]

[User] NhFinally CloneSpy supports unicode so it's the best duplicate checker - absolutely. [2009-12-16 22:01]

[User] noavenvery slow software and pops 10000 windows that needs 10000 confirmations !

Easy Duplicate Finder / Duplicate Cleaner (no portable) / Dupkiller are way better

[Anonymous] MCBastosMyself, I prefer using Dupemerge (http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/ntutils.html). It leverages the use of NTFS hardlinks to free space while keeping both directory entries -- even with different names. If you install the Hardlink Shell Extension, you can see which files are hardlinked easily. [2010-04-11 17:01]

[Anonymous] BillI've used this utility for about 5 years along with several other dup killers. It has a bit more of a learning curve than some of the others and users might miss, or not understand, certain options (like how to show all of the duplicate files together instead of having to confirm each file individually. Maybe the designer could make showing all of the files together the default. It lets you save a set of options that you can load for different situations. I haven't used it much but it's worth looking if you want customized de-duping. The app isn't the fastest but I'm not looking for fast as much as I'm looking for accuracy. So far, this app hasn't let me down. It's a useful addition to my toolkit. [2010-08-31 15:36]

If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
