Synopsis: PortableApps Suite (Base Edition) is primarily a program launcher with an integrated backup utility. You can pick-and-choose which apps from portableapps.com you wish to add to the launcher via its own PAF (Portable Application Format) packages. You can also add your own apps to the launcher menu by placing the EXE file in its own subfolder under the PortableApps folder. Then click Options, Refresh App Icons and the new app will show up in the launcher menu. Unfortunately, the launcher does not support categories or groups. The integrated backup utility helps you backup/restore either all files on your portable drive, or selected data files to another location.

The Lite and Standard Edition are also available that comes preconfigured with various portable apps like Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice etc.

[Anonymous] nyarnonNow why doesn't PFC have something like that. [2006-11-23 09:20]

[Anonymous] mosaicI second that. Maybe we could collectively compile a list and make a PFC version? By the way, I think PFC is very well maintained. It's time to take to the next level? [2006-11-23 17:34]

[Anonymous] [BOT]FluffyHeh, can't help but wonder where the "inspiration" for this UI came from. :P [2006-11-23 20:09]

[Anonymous] Andrew LeeWhy do we need a "PFC version" when we already have PStart? :) Just to introduce yet another format? eg. PPAF (PFC Portable Application Format). [2006-11-23 21:00]

[Anonymous] stacomaMajor updates were made with the programs there, but I think PStart just makes a better fit for many (at this time) than the PAS launcher, especially with it being new. [2006-11-23 22:55]

[Anonymous] mosaicOkay, you guys made good points about PStart. I liked it initially, however, I no longer use it. I have a dedicated 20GB portable USB drive for all the portable applications. I constantly add/delete/update my software collections, thanks to the proliferation of portable softwares. However, almost everytime I have to add a new entry or remove or modify (especially if you are keeping multiple versions of the same software) in the PStart. It's a pain in ...?

Anyhow, I am not purely saying to following the suite, but something innovative to keep the pain out of upgrading/deleting/adding a new portable software and yet still easily make PStart workable.

I am not so sure I am making any sense. later guys. keep up the good work.

[Anonymous] under_lineExcellent look. I like it. But i not to PortableApps scan my folders, I want to add application in menu myself :( like PStart. [2006-12-14 03:46]

[Anonymous] MeterI really like ASuite (search for it here at PFC). It's a lot like PStart, but it's open source and bit more tweakable. [2007-04-03 09:30]

[Anonymous] Donaldthe upcoming beta and all future versions are PAF only [2008-06-03 03:00]

[Anonymous] Donaldthat will mean no more exe's added by just adding [2008-06-03 03:01]

[Anonymous] ai'd say this is aesthetically pleasing, but it's just to darn simple and it appears to be proprietary (see Donald's comment), i will have to develop a menu myself, based around this applications looks entirely. [2008-06-04 14:31]

[Anonymous] a.. but with a hell of a lot more options. a PStart, Portable Apps Suite, hybrid sounds intriguing. [2008-06-04 14:33]

[Anonymous] E=mcci like portableapps.com, but i have found a fork project on sourceforge.net named geek.menu, this will improve portableApps in many ways:
- menu structure
- dynamic drive-letter-replacement
- trueCrypt-support
- better design
- etc.
i love it.

[Anonymous] donnconI stopped using the PortableApps launcher in favor of PStart due to portablity, directory structure, etc... PortableApps has a nice product, and a great site, but I find myself on this site using PStart for a reason....it's better. [2008-07-14 08:38]

[Anonymous] applelzy@yahoo.comNot working even run the extract file. Could anyone tell me where should I extract to? Which directory? TQ [2009-10-13 09:14]

For more general topics (eg. whether apps that write to the registry, leave traces on the host machine, rely on certain versions of IE etc. can be considered portable), please post to the Portable Freeware Discussion forum. If your virus scanner has detected a virus in the application, please email the author directly or post to the forum. Note that false positives (i.e. flagging a virus when there is actually none) are extremely common for virus scanners. When in doubt, try an online scanner like Online Malware Scanner or VirusTotal, which scans files using multiple anti-virus engines. It is very likely to be a false positive if only a few engines raise the red flag.
